Second Job

English Social Sciences Philosophy Psychoanalysis
What does 'second job' mean here?

"At first, everyone feels that psychoanalysis means something very special, and above all that truth is, in this case, articulated with a mode of representation that gives the word 'psychoanalysis' its style, and gives it its second job, if I can put it that way."

Ehsan Kiani (asker) Jan 27, 2018:
@philgoddard Thank you for your help!
philgoddard Jan 22, 2018:
I think it means "secondary meaning", with "emploi" referring to the use of the word. It definitely doesn't mean "job".
Ehsan Kiani (asker) Jan 22, 2018:
@philgoddard Do you have any suggestion as for the correct translation?
philgoddard Jan 22, 2018:
Now that we have the French (thanks, Alison), it's clear that "second job" is a mistranslation.
Ehsan Kiani (asker) Jan 22, 2018:
@philgoddard I don't see anything being lost in translation - in this particular case - now that I'm looking at the original. And yes indeed, Lacan and his language! Tell me about it!
Ehsan Kiani (asker) Jan 22, 2018:
@Alison MacG Thank you for providing the original French. I'm reading it in Macey's translation. The word in question is 'l'emploi secondaire'.
Alison MacG Jan 22, 2018:
Original French?

philgoddard Jan 22, 2018:
That explains it! It's possible that something got lost in translation. But a lot of Lacan is like the emperor's new clothes: when you look at it closely, it doesn't mean anything very much.
Ehsan Kiani (asker) Jan 22, 2018:
It's Lacan giving one of his puzzling lectures! (Translated by David Macey)
philgoddard Jan 22, 2018:
I'm not sure this sentence means very much. It sounds like someone speaking rather than writing, and not expressing themselves very well. I don't know what "style" means, either.

second role/function/task

It isn't clear, from the context you have given, what the first and second jobs actually are. However, "job" means the role, function or task of psychoanalysis.

Given the French original now provided by Alison, perhaps usage would be closer.

agree philgoddard : I don't think this really answers the question.//Yes, I agree with that.

special meaning; mystery; mythical image (here)

Here second job means special meaning; mystery; mythical image.

More context here:

The Place, Origin and End of My Teaching
than is required, the mystery surrounding some of the words we use, words that have their own shock-effect, that make sense. The word 'truth', for example. What is'the truth*? Well, 'psychoanalysis* is one of those words. At first, everyone feels that it means something very special, and above all that truth is, in this case, articulated with a mode of representation that gives the word 'psychoanalysis' its style, and gives it its second job, if I can put it that way.
The truth in question is exactly the same as in the mythical image that represents it. It is something hidden in nature, and then it comes out quite naturally, emerges from the well. It comes out, but that isn't enough.
It speaks.
It says things, usually things we were not expecting. That's what we hear when we say: 'At last we know the truth about this business. Someone
is beginning to come clean.'When we talk about 'psychoanalysis', I mean when we refer to this thing that lends it some weight, that is what we are talking about, including the appropriate correlative effect, which is what we call the surprise-effect.
