2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you Judith. I asked the גונדר's assistant... you are right about the equivalent rank in IDF, but warder doesn't seem "big" enough for my purposes. "

warden

Deputy or Assistant (Prison) Superintendent or Warden may be the one, depending on the country.

Warden =
2 b : the governor of a town, district, or fortress
3a : an official charged with special supervisory duties or with the enforcement of specified laws or regulations

3b : an official in charge of the operation of a prison

It all depends on the target country, as each one has its specific terminology.

Comparing the insignia on 2 sites above, the term would translate as Senior Prison Officer in UK.

Note from asker:
Thanks, Simon. Funny, I made the same comparison, and wrote the latter. Now it's up to the client to approve.

prison warden (USA) or warder (UK)

Warden means a guard or guardian at different kinds of institutions. The Hebrew word גונדר now refers to the prison system in Israel. It was also a rank in the Etzel. I do not think the term is used for any other institutions, as the word warden is. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warden and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warder

Sorry, I did not notice the other answers so there is some overlap!
Note from asker:
Thanks Mary. I didn't know גונדר was used in the Etzel.

Prison Governor

Superintendent of Jail
In the UK, a Prison Governor is responsible for the management and security of a prison, jail, remand centre and young offenders' institution. In India and Pakistan, the head of a District, Central, Women or special Prison/Jail is called Superintendent of Jail, Superintendent Jail, Senior Superintendent of Jail or Senior Superintendent Jail, depending upon the size and area of responsibility/jurisdiction of the prison. In Sri Lanka, Superintendent is a rank in the Department of Prisons, who would head a prison.

Note from asker:
Thanks Gad. While I agree that warden doesn't seem appropriate here, I think it's not commissioner either, which is נציב, and I only really need the גונדר who is מנהל בית הכלא in my text.
