español term

casas comerciales (de venta de insumos)

Talking about the production and marketing of olive oil

Noni Gilbert Riley Jan 11, 2008:
Hmm. What I think they're getting at is that the suppliers have had more influence on how cultivation is carried out (whether to try and up production, what varieties to produce, whether to aim at top of market or bottom end etc.) than the general...

I'd got as far as supplier too :o) The previous bit talks about how olive growing operations in Spain are intensive and increasingly hyper-intensive, and how the area of land to be irrigated is also growing. The next part talks about how the majority of land is "marginal" i.e. it is geographically limited in some way - by hillsides mainly.
Noni Gilbert Riley Jan 11, 2008:
I understand casa comercial de venta de insumos as being "suppliers", as in bulk suppliers, as opposed to retailers. But the rest of the sentence leaves me equally stumped. Can you give us the previous and next?

farmers' merchants / agricultural merchants

"In Spain, the influence of agricultural merchants on farmers' growing habits has been greater than the influence coming from publicly-available information and training"

A business which sells inputs to farmers calls itself "Farmers' Merchants" (1.14 million hits) or "Agricultural Merchants" (235 thousand hits). I put "agricultural merchants" so as not to repeat "farmers".

I would perhaps go for "agricultural supply firms" as perhaps the Spanish term includes the manufacturers of the products (fertilizers etc.)
