Source text - Portuguese Problemas no clima afetam resultado do PIB trimestral
As quebras nessas lavouras têm sido espantosas”, avalia.
Translation - English Climate problems affect quarterly GDP result
Drought in the Northeast and excessive rainfall in the North damaged grain crops, which has had a negative impact on the Brazilian economy.
Climate problems were the primary cause for the drop of 7.3% in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of agriculture in the quarter. The bad performance of the sector was the main factor in the fall in GDP of the country between January and March, which was announced in this Friday. GDP grew by only 0.2% over the last quarter of 2011 – a result below what was expected by markets analysts.
Despite the fact that estimates that the area cultivated for the harvest of 2011/12 will be 3.6% larger than that of the previous harvest – 51.68 million hectares and 49.87 million hectares respectively – climate problems all around Brazil has damaged the harvests, according to the National Food Supply Company (Portuguese acronym CONAB), of the Ministry of the Agriculture. The first bean harvest, for example, which has an impact on 1st quarter agricultural output, suffered a fall of 23% from the previous harvest. In case of of the rice, the reduction will be 13% for the year. On top of that, the grain that has greater weight on GDP, the soy, will show a fall of 11.5% in this harvest.
In the coming days, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) will release a report with an estimate of the agricultural output for the month. The expectation of the analysts contacted by VEJA is that the output continues to fall. "The expectation is that everything is likely get worse. The Northeast is in a historical drought. Some places are not even commemorating the Festa de São João. Beyond that, the North Region is flooded", says Amaryllis Roman, agribusiness analyst from consultancy firm Tendências. "Those regions have other crops, as manioc, papaya, among others, that are individually unimportant, but together they have an impact. The drops in those crops has been frightening", he evaluates.
To the analyst, it is important to see that the prospects are also not positive for sugarcane, whose harvest in the Central South region Center presents problems. Compared with last year, the predicted sugarcane harvest for May is around 38% lower. That crop has a lot of influence on second-quarter GDP.
Prices – Over the last three years, the world has faced many problems related to climate and Brazil has taken advantage of the 'window of opportunity', since conditions here went well. This year marked a reversal of that situation.
With output problems and steady demand, it is possible to see an increase in prices. In case of of sugar, for example, the prices may have dropped due to a projected increase in international supply. In the domestic market, however, that did not happen due to the fall in production.
Beans, despite having three harvests a year, also saw its price rise between January and March, since coming harvests are bound to be affected by the drought in the Northeast. In March, the average bean price was 44% over that of December. In April, the price reached a peak, with some varieties of bean reaching levels around 75% higher compared with December. Equally, prices observed in May of this year in comparison with with the equal period last year, show an increase is 113%.
