German to English: Patrick Süskind. Die Geschichte von Herrn Sommer. General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Gegend seit zweiundzwanzig Jahren gewesen sei.
Translation - English Well, we had been to the races and as we were driving home late in the afternoon it was, indeed, still hot. In fact, it felt even hotter and more sultry than at midday but the sky had already clouded over with a thin veil of mist. In the west there were lead-grey clouds, edged in a puss-like yellow. After a quarter of an hour my father had to switch on the headlights because the clouds were suddenly so close that they hung like curtains, right across the horizon and cast dark shadows over the landscape. Then some gusts of wind swept down from the hillsides and fell in broad strokes across the cornfields. It was as if they were combing the fields, and the bushes and shrubs were petrified. Almost at once the rain began to fall - no, not the rain as such, but rather a few large drops at first. They were as fat as grapes, splashing here and there on the asphalt and bursting on the bonnet and the windscreen of the car. And then the storm broke. The newspapers later reported that this had been the worst storm in our area for twenty-two years. I do not know if this was correct as I was only seven years old at the time. However, what I do know is that I did not experience another storm like it in my life time - and certainly not in a car out on an open country road. The water no longer fell in drops. It fell from the sky like clouds of vapour. Before you knew it, the road was flooded. The car ploughed its way through the water. On both sides of us, fountains spurted up like walls of water and as you looked through the windscreen you were looking through a sheer layer of water although the windscreen wipers were frantically beating back and forth.
However there was worse to come. This was because the rain gradually turned to hail. You could hear it before you could see it because the sound of rushing water changed to a harder, more high-pitched drumming and you could feel it because of an icy cold which penetrated the car.
