Conocí a Anthony Asael y Stéphanie Rabemiafara hace más de cuatro años, en Chile. Cuando me contaron del proyecto, sus objetivos y el material que querían recopilar me pareció una iniciativa fantástica, que necesitaba ser llevada a cabo. La idea de poder hacer arte con niños de cada uno de los 192 países del mundo reconocidos por Naciones Unidas me sedujo de inmediato, porque es de absoluta sintonía con mis convicciones. Cada día estoy más seguro de que el arte es uno de los mejores medios –o excusas– para acercar a las personas de todo el mundo y derribar barreras de prejuicios, distancias geográficas o culturales. Y, mostrar que todos somos iguales a través de obras hechas por niños, me pareció mejor aún. UNICEF también apreció esto y apoyó el proyecto con su patrocinio desde el comienzo.
La pasión y entusiasmo de estos dos jóvenes me llevó a confiar en su seriedad y en su capacidad para llegar hasta el final con esta inmensa tarea. No se trataba de dos hippies con una excusa para hacer turismo, sino de profesionales con un proyecto sólido y un plan bien diseñado buscando dar una ventana de expresión a los niños de todo el mundo. Encontrar personas como ellos, dispuestos a postergar sus carreras y sus vidas personales, durante cuatro años, por alcanzar un objetivo superior –simple, pero a la vez original y muy potente- no es común en estos días, donde predomina el individualismo. Ahora veo que no me equivoqué; se atrasaron sólo un mes en su programa inicial y el resultado superó con creces mis expectativas, que desde el inicio fueron altas.
Ahora Anthony y Stéphanie llegan al final de un largo recorrido con un tesoro invaluable de fotos, dibujos y poemas regalados por los niños del mundo. Por esta aventura hicieron sacrificios personales importantes y sus vidas estuvieron en riesgo en más de un momento. Estoy seguro que guardan mil recuerdos felices y también uno que otro no tan grato, pero que cada uno será un aprendizaje enorme desde ahora y para el resto de sus vidas.
El comienzo no fue fácil. Renunciaron a sus trabajos regulares, y después de enviar más de 600 cartas a empresas para conseguir financiamiento y de contactar a casas editoras y a la prensa del lugar donde vivían, se encontraron con la desalentadora y casi unánime respuesta: “vuelvan en cuatro años más, cuando el proyecto esté listo”. Afortunadamente, su umbral de tolerancia a la frustración es alto y la meta siempre brilló más que el ripio del camino.
En sus viajes los fotógrafos sostuvieron encuentros con más de 18.000 niños y recolectaron cerca de 25.000 obras, entre dibujos y poemas. En cada taller utilizaron una metodología similar, que incluía la presentación del proyecto, luego una sesión de composición y creación fotográfica, después una dinámica de lluvia de ideas para que los niños internalicen las nociones de cultura e identidad cultural, talleres de dibujo y escritura y juegos interactivos de geografía, utilizando fotos tomadas en otros países. Y escogieron niños de entre 8 y 12 años, edad en la que la inocencia y creatividad los impulsa a expresarse de manera libre y espontánea.
Cada cierto tiempo Anthony y Stéphanie hacían una parada en Chile para avanzar en la maqueta del libro y me contaban algunas anécdotas de viaje. Así me enteré de varias de sus hazañas: partieron con un presupuesto diario de USD 10 por persona para cubrir todos los gastos; y se demoraron dos años y medio en conseguir el permiso para entrar en Corea del Norte, pero insistieron hasta que lo lograron, transformándose en el primer proyecto de arte extranjero en ese país.
También estuvieron en la cárcel y pasaron por lugares recién asolados por terremotos, inundaciones, guerras, rebeliones, atentados y golpes de Estado. Circularon en climas violentos y amenazantes, de distinta índole, y se libraron por minutos de ser víctimas de naufragios y asaltos.
Este recuento de peripecias puede sonar anecdótico, hasta que uno reflexiona un momento y se da cuenta de que sus vidas estuvieron en riesgo en cientos de ocasiones. Sólo como ejemplo: estuvieron hospitalizados en dos oportunidades; una de ellas fue cuando, durante una de sus estadías en Santiago, a Anthony le dio peritonitis. Parece que algo o alguien los protegía; unos días antes estaban trabajando en las montañas de Ecuador y dos semanas después tenían que estar en Iraq.
Además de realizar las gestiones para coordinar los talleres debieron desarrollar una logística gigantesca y eficiente, que cubriera miles de aspectos prácticos a un bajo costo. Programaron cada taller a distancia, con una anticipación de entre tres y ocho meses. Organizaron itinerarios, contactaron traductores, se pusieron vacunas, consiguieron transportes y alojamientos, almacenaron miles de datos, lograron enviar cientos de dibujos y poemas de un extremo del mundo a otro.
Contaron con la importante colaboración de UNICEF, que los apoyó directa e indirectamente en más de 90 países. Los funcionarios de la organización los ayudaron a coordinar los talleres, tramitar las visas, conseguir las autorizaciones de los ministerios de educación, averiguar sobre medidas de seguridad y precaución para desplazarse por zonas conflictivas y mucho más. Esta cooperación fue decisiva para el éxito del proyecto. Además, formaron una red de cientos de voluntarios, integrada tanto por personas como por organizaciones y empresas, cuya generosidad, confianza y entusiasmo les permitió también llegar hasta el final de esta travesía.
En uno de sus últimos viajes a Chile, Anthony y Stéphanie me contaron una historia que representa bien la mezcla de aventura, magia y suerte que ha envuelto el largo viaje que dio fruto a este libro. Ellos querían visitar Nauru, una pequeña isla del Pacífico con sólo 10.000 habitantes, que no tiene puerto ni aerolínea propia, tampoco agua potable, electricidad las 24 horas del día ni suministro regular de combustible. Al hacer el check-in para viajar, les informaron que el vuelo de regreso estaba cancelado por tiempo indefinido. Tenían tres opciones: no viajar, ir pero sin saber cuándo podrían volver, e ir y volver en el mismo avión, en el vuelo del día siguiente en la mañana. Tomaron la tercera opción, a riesgo de no alcanzar a hacer el taller o –peor aun- de perder el vuelo y no saber cuándo ni de qué modo podrían regresar.
Aterrizaron en la isla a las 16:00 horas, pero todas las escuelas habían terminado la jornada a las 13:30. Sólo tenían el nombre de la escuela y sabían que la profesora se llamaba Joanie. Como todos los extranjeros que llegan a Nauru, Anthony y Stéphanie debieron dejar su pasaporte con el jefe de inmigración. Según la norma local, sólo podrían recuperar sus documentos dos días después, pero dado que se irían pocas horas después lograron negociar para ir a buscarlos directamente donde el ministro del Interior.
Al salir del aeropuerto no encontraron taxis, porque como en la isla no hay combustible, los únicos que circulan son los 12 autos oficiales de los ministerios. Entonces comenzaron a preguntarle a los peatones si conocían a la profesora, ¡y tuvieron éxito al tercer intento! El transeúnte resultó ser tío de la profesora y trabajar además en el Ministerio de Educación, por lo que pidió al ministro usar su auto para ir a casa de Joanie. Llegaron donde la profesora, le contaron del programa y de su pronta salida, en menos de 14 horas. Ya eran las 18:30 horas y, como si fuera la cosa más natural del mundo, ella sugirió reunir a sus alumnos y hacer el taller esa misma noche. Recorrieron la isla entera en el auto pick-up del ministro recogiendo a todos los niños, cuyos padres les dieron permiso sin ningún problema.

Como llegaron muy de noche a la escuela, tuvieron que acudir al ministro de Energía para pedirle que les suministrara luz eléctrica para las tres o cuatro horas de talleres. Las actividades con los niños fueron un éxito y los talleres se desarrollaron en una sala llena de sonrisas, alegría, energía y curiosidad. Los niños, la profesora y Anthony y Stéphanie dejaron la escuela a la una de la mañana. Ellos llevaban más de 20 horas sin dormir y habían comido muy poco, estaban agotados, pero los niños podían haber continuado hasta el amanecer. Cuando dejaron al último niño de vuelta en su casa, en la oscuridad completa de las calles, recordaron que tenían que recuperar sus pasaportes. Partieron a la casa del ministro del Interior. Eran las dos de la mañana; el ministro salió a la puerta en pijamas, con los ojos cerrados por el sueño, y les entregó los pasaportes timbrados. Les quedaban tres horas para dormir antes de tomar el vuelo de regreso. Habían cumplido su misión. Estoy seguro que Anthony y Stéphanie recordarán para siempre con un cariño especial su aventura en Nauru y las obras creadas por esos niños.
El libro que tienen en sus manos tiene algo de la magia de Nauru pero es, principalmente, fruto de la dedicación y el trabajo incansable de Anthony y Stéphanie, quienes pusieron su empeño en cada detalle, desde el primer al último taller y desde la concepción inicial del diseño del libro hasta el resultado final. Lograron financiamiento con dineros que ellos mismos aportaron, donaciones de empresas y de personas, venta de fotos y algunas becas de fundaciones. Y entusiasmaron a muchos en el camino. Llegaron hasta la oficina de Fundación América con 25.000 dibujos y poemas y tuvieron que hacer un enorme trabajo de selección para escoger sólo una foto, un dibujo y un poema para presentar cada país.
La restricción impuesta por el número de páginas fue una gran limitante, pero también un importante ejercicio para definir el propósito de este libro. En la era del mundo digital y del acceso remoto a miles de datos e imágenes no tenía sentido tratar de hacer una publicación enciclopédica, una representación exhaustiva y detallada de cada país. Por eso, se optó por la salomónica medida de destinar dos páginas para presentar cada uno de los 192 países reconocidos por las Naciones Unidas a través de la creatividad y las palabras de los niños, esto es, un dibujo y un poema realizados por niños, además de una foto a página completa de uno o varios niños del país. Se incluyeron también algunos datos de referencia, como número de habitantes y un mapa de ubicación, pero se dejó un lugar protagónico para reflejar con fidelidad la forma de expresarse de los niños, con los poemas escritos de su puño y letra en su lengua de origen y dibujos que respetan los colores, trazos y materialidad con los que fueron realizados.
El resultado es un libro con el espíritu de los niños del mundo.

Translation - English Introduction: Robert Edwards Describes the Project and Tells Our History through His Eyes
I met Anthony Asael and Stéphanie Rabemiafara four years ago in Chile. When they told me about the project, its objectives, and the material that they wanted to compile, I thought it was a fantastic initiative that should be carried out. The idea of being able to create art with children from each of the 192 countries recognized by the United Nations immediately appealed to me because it is completely in line with my convictions. Every day I am more certain that art is one of the best ways – or excuses – to bring people all over the world closer together and break down barriers of prejudice, geographic distance, or culture. And showing that all of us are equal through artwork done by children is even better. UNICEF also appreciated this concept and supported the project with their sponsorship from the beginning.
The passion and enthusiasm of these two young people brought me to trust in their sincerity and in their capacity to follow through with this immense task. They were not two hippies looking for an excuse to travel, but rather professionals with a solid project and a well-designed plan, looking to provide a window of expression for children around the world. It is not common these days, when individualism dominates, to find people like them: willing to suspend their careers and personal lives, for four years, to reach a higher goal – a simple, yet original and very powerful one. Now I see that I did not make a mistake; they were only delayed one month from their initial schedule, and the result far exceeded my expectations, which were high from the beginning.
Anthony and Stéphanie have now reached the end of a long tour, returning with an invaluable treasure of photos, drawings and poems given by children of the world. They made important personal sacrifices for this adventure, and their lives were at risk on more than one occasion. I am sure that they have many, many happy memories, one no more pleasant than the other, and that each one will be an enormous learning experience now and for the rest of their lives.
The beginning was not easy. They resigned from their regular jobs, and after sending more than 600 letters to businesses to secure funding and contacting editorial houses and the press where they lived, they were met with the discouraging and almost unanimous response: “Come back in four years, when the project is ready.” Fortunately, their tolerance threshold for frustration is high and the goal always mattered more than the obstacles along the road.
In their travels, the photographers met more than 18,000 children and collected close to 25,000 works of art, both drawings and poems. They used a similar methodology in each workshop, which included a presentation about the project, followed by a session about composing and creating photographs. Then they held a dynamic brainstorming session so that the children could internalize the notions of culture and cultural identity. They had drawing and writing workshops and interactive geography games, using photos taken in other countries. They chose children from eight to twelve years old, the ages at which innocence and creativity drive them to express themselves in a free and spontaneous way.
Every once in a while, Anthony and Stéphanie would stop in Chile to work on the mockup of the book, and they would tell me some anecdotes from the trip. That is how I learned of many of their achievements: they departed with a daily budget of 10 USD per person to cover all costs. It took two and a half years to get permission to enter North Korea, but they persisted until they got it. Theirs was the first foreign art project in that country.
They also spent time in jail and went through places that were recently devastated by earthquakes, floods, wars, rebellions, attacks, and military coups. They traveled in different types of violent and threatening environments, and they escaped shipwrecks and muggings by a matter of minutes.
This eventful account could sound anecdotal until one reflects a moment and realizes that their lives were at risk on hundreds of occasions. Just as an example: they were hospitalized twice; one of these times, Anthony got peritonitis during one of his stays in Santiago. It seems that something or someone was protecting them. A few days beforehand they were working in the mountains of Ecuador, and two weeks later they had to be in Iraq.
In addition to coordinating the workshops, they had to develop a gigantic and efficient logistical plan that covered thousands of practical aspects at a low cost. They scheduled each workshop from a distance, three to eight months in advance. They organized itineraries, contacted translators, got vaccines, secured transportation and food, kept a massive amount of information, and successfully sent hundreds of drawings and poems from one end of the earth to another.
They relied on UNICEF’s essential collaboration, which supported them directly and indirectly in more than 90 countries. Officials in the organization helped them coordinate workshops, arrange for visas, obtain authorization from ministries of education, find out about security and precautionary measures in order to travel through areas of unrest, and much more. This cooperation was critical for the success of the project. Moreover, they formed a network of hundreds of volunteers, made up as much by individuals as by organizations and businesses, whose generosity, trust and enthusiasm also allowed them to reach the end of this journey.
In one of their last trips to Chile, Anthony and Stéphanie told me a story that well represents the mixture of adventure, magic and luck which has enveloped the long trip and made this book possible. They wanted to visit Nauru, a small Pacific island with only 10,000 inhabitants, which does not have its own port or airline, potable water, electricity 24 hours a day, or a regular supply of fuel. When checking in for the trip, they were informed that the return flight was canceled for an indefinite period of time. They had three options: to not travel, to go without knowing when they would be able to come back, and to go and return on the same airplane, on the next morning’s flight. They took the third option at the risk of not being able to have the workshop, or – even worse – missing the flight and not knowing when or how they would be able to return.
They landed on the island at 4:00 pm, but all the schools had finished for the day at 1:30 pm. They only knew the name of the school and that the teacher’s name was Joanie. Like all foreigners who arrive in Nauru, Anthony and Stéphanie had to leave their passports with the head of immigration. According to local law, they could only get their passports back two days later. However, given that they would leave in a few hours, they negotiated to get their passports directly from the Minister of the Interior.
They did not find taxis when they left the airport. Since there is no fuel on the island, the only cars are those belonging to the 12 official ministers. So they started asking pedestrians if they knew the teacher, and they were successful on the third try! The passer-by turned out to be the teacher’s uncle and also worked in the Ministry of Education. Therefore, they asked the minister to use his car to go to Joanie’s house. They reached the teacher and told her about the schedule and their rapid departure, in less than 14 hours. It was already 4:30 pm and, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, the teacher suggested that they gather the students together and have the workshop that very night. They covered the entire island in the minister’s pick-up truck, picking up all the children, whose parents gave them permission without any problems.
Since they had arrived at the school very late, they had to ask the Minister of Energy to provide electric lights for the three or four hours of workshops. The activities with the children were a success and the workshops took place in a room full of smiles, joy, energy and curiosity. The children, the teacher, and Anthony and Stéphanie left the school at one in the morning. They went more than 20 hours without sleep and had eaten very little; they were exhausted, but the children could have continued until dawn. When they dropped off the last child at his house, in the complete darkness of the streets, they remembered that they had to recover their passports. They left for the Minister of the Interior’s house. It was two in the morning. The minister came to the door in pajamas, with sleepy eyes, and gave them their stamped passports. There were three hours left for them to sleep before catching the return flight. They had fulfilled their mission. I am sure that Anthony and Stéphanie will always remember, with special affection, their adventure in Nauru and the works of art created by those children.
The book that you have in your hands contains some of the magic of Nauru, but is mainly a product of Anthony and Stéphanie’s dedication and tireless work. They put every effort into each detail, from the first to the last workshop, and from the initial concept of the book design to the final result. They financed the project with their own funds, donations from companies and individuals, by selling photos and with some grants from foundations. And they got many people excited about the project along the way. They arrived at the Fundación América (America Foundation) office with 25,000 drawings and poems. They had to undertake the enormous task of choosing only one photo, one drawing and one poem to represent each country.
The number of pages was very limiting, but it was also an important exercise to define the purpose of this book. In the era of the digital world and remote access to massive quantities of information and images, it did not make sense to try to make an encyclopedia, an exhaustive and detailed representation of each country. Therefore, they made the judicious decision to designate two pages to represent each of the 192 countries recognized by the United Nations through the creativity and words of children. In other words, there is a child’s drawing and poem, as well as a photo per page of one or a few children from each country. They also included some reference information, such as the number of inhabitants and a map. But they left a prominent place to faithfully reflect the way the children expressed themselves, with poems written in their handwriting and letters in their native language and drawings that respect the colors, strokes and materials with which they were created.
The result is a book filled with the spirit of the children of the world.

As a child, I was fascinated by the rhythm and beauty of the language I heard Mexican neighbors speaking. In college, I explored my interest in Latino culture through formal study, leading the Spanish Club, and volunteering in the Latino community. Despite all this, I had no intention to use my language skills in a career, seeing it as a hobby more than a path to a career.
