Discussion

Alexandra Taggart Aug 24, 2009:
The context tells that it happened at work, supposedly he is allright at the time he speaks about himself.So, it was not illness but something that overtook him temporarily.It could be either or:his stomach or his back.Personally I tend to think it was his stomach and give slender chances to occurence of back pain unless some kind of back problem with this man is mentioned in the text which I have not read.That is very much of "babushka's language" to say "меня прихватило" about her back pain.
Mikhail Korolev Aug 24, 2009:
May be there is something I don't know about, but what context are you talking about, Alexandra? In other thread Anna Poplavskaya suggested that "прихватило" could refer to a side effect of "фестал". I can't say I abosolutely agree with that, since I don't know the broader context, but, in any case, that suggestion seems quite reasonable. But what exactly makes you think that "прихватило", in this case, implies a sudden back pain? Could you be more specific? I don't say you're wrong, I just can't understand why you're so sure about 'back pain'. In my opinion, when a person says "меня прихватило" he/she doesn't necessarily refer to a sudden back pain.
Alexandra Taggart Aug 24, 2009:
This expression could be used in the sense it suggests here, the conrext suggests that he has experienced pain and it took a short while at work.He did not faii ill.Myself, I've have heard "прихватило" referring to"bad back" only, a sudden, spasmatic pain which results in bodily movement as something excruciating "хватает",grabbing hold of,but does not hold for long.
Mikhail Korolev Aug 23, 2009:
Александра, если вы сделаете поиск на точную фразу "меня прихватило", вы увидите, что она охватывает гораздо более широкие сценарии, чем просто "ilness overtook me" и "a sudden shortlived pain in the area of stomach or spine".
Alexandra Taggart Aug 22, 2009:
"прихвалило" Could be one of two:" it cought me by my stomach"( stomach ulcer) or "it caught me in my back" ( spinal column problem).
Michael Zapuskalov Aug 21, 2009:
Disagree with Piotrnikitin When someone has Diarrhea they say *пронесло* )
Anna Poplavskaya (X) Aug 21, 2009:
Agree with Piotrnikitin Seems very likely
Piotrnikitin Aug 21, 2009:
Diarrhea? It could mean that he got sudden diarrhea at work, but as usual that would depend on the context...

Gotta agree with you, Dorin. Here, "got" adds a moment, a one-time action feeling. Thanks a lot!
disagree Alexandra Taggart : The first assosiation with the word "sick" is "vomiting" and "feeling weak".

Russian term (edited): (меня) прихватило

(I had) sudden pain

прихватить - to have sudden pain (heartache, stomachache, etc.)

Chatty word mostly used by seniors.

Example sentence:

Да, совсем некстати меня прихватило вчера. . Что это было? Воскресенье-понедельник просто плохо себя чувствовала. живот болел, а вчера. . . Утр

Peer comment(s):

neutral Olga Cartlidge : Apart from pain the expression is used by people suffering from surges in blood pressure or heart failure. // "All of a sudden I felt unwell / funny when I was at work " - the R term is used when it s the result of a chronic condition = not the 1st time

Peer comment(s):

disagree Andrey Belousov (X) : Lucky you are it did not bend you over - triple.... though, that'd be a scene I'm curious to see///// As for the "spasm".... give me a break! It could have been anything not requiring your altering the souce text
