Glossary entry (derived from question below)
Spanish term or phrase:
se desgastan en un irrelevante y pasajero control del Estado
English translation:
waste away in their meaningless and transient control of the State
Spanish term
se desgastan en un irrelevante y pasajero control del Estado
I understand the meaning, but am lost for words in the English. Translating into US English. Any ideas?
“Esta es otra muestra de cómo las religiones utilizan a los estados y los Imperios, quienes en un momento determinado de la historia caen y perecen, mientras que la religión permanece triunfante y rápidamente con su influencia, continua su avance; esta vez en la cabeza de otro estado dominante.
El Islamismo en sus 1400 años de historia, con 2000 millones de creyentes continúa definiendo la política de los Estados, mientras los políticos se desgastan en un irrelevante y pasajero control del Estado.”
Many thanks in advance.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

: Before I looked at the answers, I thought of "wear themselves out," so I certainly agree with you! Among the options you give, I would choose "pointless" and "transient."

: I don't think "wear themselves out" works here - doesn't it mean (as Lesley suggests) " waste time"?

they waste their time exercising an irrelevant and ephimeral control of the State

philgoddard
: I think this is better than the other two suggestions, but I'm still not sure what "ephemeral" means.
