counting the days

This is more a colloquial than idiom.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Ozethai : When you are counting the days for someone to appear or for something to happen, you wouldn't be having this casual, passive attitude like that of this monk. You would be anxious and eager. It is almost the opposite of what the saying should convey.

This is exactly what it means. There is nothing one can do waiting for the inevitable. So it is better to take a passive attitude than worry about it.

to go on tolling the bell as long as one is a monk.

I'd like to translate it literally because it's a common saying.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Ozethai : Your reason (because it is common saying) is exactly why you should NOT translate it literally. Good translators would always consider their target language and target audience.

"going through the motions"

Yes, it's an idiom.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Ozethai : You've got the meaning right and you have tried to use an equivalent expression as well. You should be commended here. But you know there is something better. Please refer to Commuease's choice.

FYI

Do what one is supposed to do without any motivation/enthusiasm.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Ozethai : A good explanation, Jyuan. I must agree with you on that one. But I believe translation involves more than just understanding the source and the ability to explain in the target language.
