Brazilian cats communicate as their Romanian relatives 'miau'. Dogs 'au au'

Now I'm trying to identify birds by their language and habits

Not only I love cats, but I also love all animals, forest and living close to nature - not to mention that Brazil is the country where I left my heart. I soooooo envy you!

Maybe I'll have a chance to meet your cats one day - if you let me, of course.

I never thought about that. At 2am I'm either sleeping, coming home from a party or working under the pressure of some impossible deadline, either case I don't care about another creature. Might be worth a Kudoz question (they need a new category there: no reason, just curious).

Finnish cats usually say "miau", "mau" or "nau". They have nine lives.

Our male cat is very talkative - and bossy! -, he is always wanting something or complaining, or just giving an opinion. He has all these different tones. Our female cat is quite the opposite, she almost never says anything, except for a short and high "igh" when she wants to get out. Sometimes when she wants something really bad (or gets stuck in a tree as she once did) she might miaow louder.

Cats say "야옹", pronounced "Yaong" or "Iaong". Dogs woud reply "멍멍", pronounced "Mong-Mong".

The tail of the cat does the trick. I mean, I saw in a documentary a cat falling in slow-mo, with its tail spinning in the reverse direction while the cat was making this remarkable flip to land on its feet.

This is fascinating! Jan 17, 2009

My big thanks to all who replied!

The bottom line is: unlike humans, cats the world over speak the same or almost the same language.

Why is that? My guess would be: cats never attempted to build the Tower of Babel, for they have better things to do with their time, such as chasing birds and butterflies, rolling in the dust, sleeping in the sun, etc.

Cat lovers of the world, unite!

What I want to know is, why do we only have translations into "human" for one word in the cat's vast vocabulary?

What is the translation--in any human language--of, for example, the plaintive "brrrroop? brrrrroop? brrrroop?" meaning roughly "I am bored and need some company," often said whilst wandering aimlessly about the house at 2 am?

I know EXACTLY what you mean, though my cat often solves this problem by jumping on my bed and (soflty) biting my nose to get my attention.:D:D

Most say' 喵' (' ㄇ一ㄠ /miao' first tone) officially, however what they say at home may be different. Cats from Hong Kong say '喵' ('miu' first tone), for example. And I'm really not sure about Minnan cats... I believe that cats from Beijing have a local variant, and say '喵儿' ('ㄇ一ㄠㄦ /miao-er') .

It says "miao."
Cats are prohibitive pets in Thailand.
Many years ago a foretune-teller told that I had very bad days since I killed a cat.
Fact: I never killed it. It is just a taboo to kill a "miao" even by accident.
But 3 kitties were killed in my house; they were born and struck in a room with locked door, and had no food or milk to eat!
