Usually clients use PayPal or send a bank transfer but now I am starting to do some work for a new client in Russia and they cannot use either one of these methods.

Can someone please advise about my different options for receiving payment? I have searched the forums and haven't found much information about this topic. I am in Canada, by the way.

Thanks,
Sarah

Dear Sarah,

I am in the UK and my Russian customers generally pay by bank transfer, although it often takes a while to set up as, for some reason, they seem to need a lot more information than customers in other countries. I am aware that there are difficulties with using PayPal in a number of eastern European countries and found this article recently when I was looking into this problem myself:

I know that some Russian agencies prefer to pay by Western Union. I haven't used it myself so far, but perhaps it might be worth investigating.

Good luck!

Unistream? Jan 23, 2013

Some Russian clients prefer Unistream. It is available worldwide. Have you tried that?

Unistream? Western Union. Jan 23, 2013

I've never seen Unistream in North America. Has anyone else?
I agree with Helen - sounds like a Western-Union case.
Please keep us updated regarding any new options.

Another option: get an fx broker Jan 23, 2013

If you are regularly going to be working for customers in other countries and/or with other currencies (as I do), it may be a good idea to get yourself an FX broker.

This is the website of mine: http://www.infinityinternational.co.uk/
There is some paperwork to fill in at the outset (this is why it's only worth it if it's a regular thing) but then you can offer your clients the option of paying you in their local currency, which some find far easier, as the FX broker has accounts in all the major currencies. You just give your client the account number for the currency of their choice and they make the payment. You'll find that some only have problems with payment because of having to pay you in Euros or Sterling, rather than the payment method involved.
Then the FX broker will swap the currency into your local currency (at a rate far better than the bank's) and transfer it over to you.
It's all free to set up and free to use so it could be an idea!!

Moneybookers Jan 23, 2013

I have used Moneybookers. It seems to be available in Russia, at least for my client, and you can withdraw funds to your bank account in Canada for a total of around $10 or so (including both sending and receiving fees).

Moneybookers will work. Jan 23, 2013

... in Canada at least. It seems to work in most of the US now too. But I know Russian agencies who don't have it.
How much do FX brokers cost? Say for $1000. Just curious.

Thanks, but I have never heard of Unistream. I will look into it.

***Edited*** I just checked Unistream's website and it does not offer services to Canada. So this will not work for me.

Thanks for your answers everyone.

Sarah

Moneybookers or Western Union Jan 24, 2013

These two options seem to be working best, especially if/when your client covers the fees on his/her end.
