I am an expert in Spanish, Portuguese and English and I think they are enough for me..Not learning any other language.I prefer being proficient in these three. All the best to you.

I'm sort of making a half-hearted attempt at learning some Thai since I live in Thailand... it's a difficult language though and tends to be a sideline that I only pick up when all else is done. I don't intend to study it to the point of being able to translate or even read, I just need some practical knowledge for everyday use. The trouble is that I'm a visual learner rather than a learn-by-hearing kind of person and the script isn't helping!

I started having Chinese (mandarin) classes last year and I'm really fascinated by this language. It's completely different from all the other languages I know and even the mental approach to the grammar, the structure, etc. should be different otherwise it's impossible to go on. I signed up for a beginner's French course at the Univ. of Pisa, which starts tomorrow. I was in France twice this summer and felt very ignorant not being able to understand or make myself understood. I hope I am still up to taking notes and studying - it has been a long time!

There aren't that many Catalan>English translators.
Yes, French. Despite some added confusion, benefits prevail. | Oct 15, 2007 |
I have been 'in the process' of learning French off and on for many years, but never really got the mastery of it. If there was a not-too-distant place to take a semi-advanced course I'd go for it again. It such a beautiful language and I 'dig' the French; must be my Huguenot roots. True, it can cause some confusion in the other language departments in my head, but the benefits surpass the disadvantages.

I have been learning Italian for 5 years now at the Dante Alighieri Association. Since my great-grandfather was Italian, I can have a double citizenship (Argentinean-Italian), but I first want to learn the Italian language and culture to do so. N.

In the process of enhancing the register of the languages I know. I would like to study languages based on Latin, like Portuguese, Roumanian and Italian with the help of native speakers and a satellite dish (a handy tool for listening to/assimilating foreign languages). When listening and reading those languages, I am able to read and understand, but not speak. My future spouse being Ukranian and knowing only Russian and Ukranian, I guess I will pick up a lot of words when we meet again and start living together. But I will not assimilate the backbone of the language i.e.grammar by being together with a native. However, the strange thing when living together with a person who does not know your language is that you get a kind of basic feeling for a language. ▲ Collapse
Want to be fluent in Italian... | Oct 15, 2007 |
I had five years of Italian at school (I graduated in 2000). I spent two months in Italy last year and it was coming back to me pretty quickly. I'm planning to move there next spring and stay for about six months this time - I love the Italian language, the culture, the people...it will be fun to spend some time there and get fluent in a language I'm passionate about.

learning with my daughter | Oct 15, 2007 |
I did not have time to enrol for a new language class, but I'm waiting for next year when my 7- year old daughter will learn Spanish at school (as I live in the basque country, the 1st foreign language taught at school here is Spanish), so I could learn too when I make sure she knows her lessons...
