Actually, there are several things that I'd like to learn, so I would mark more than one option. I'd like to learn more about marketing myself in order to attract direct clients in my field, CAT tools (although I already use Wordfast), and I would especially love to learn how to do subtitling.

How many things does one have to be expert in to be a competent translator? Translation skills seem to be the thin end of the wedge.
I need a website, a blog, Skype, Messenger, Paypal, DTP skills, I need to know all the office software inside-out. I need to know all about backups, archiving, toolboxes, streaming, file sharing, tag editors, ...

I would appreciate training from a translator's viewpoint, eg: I don't need to know all the ins-and-outs of putting together a Powerpoint presentation, but I need to know how to get at the text to translate it and give it back to the client in the same format. ▲ Collapse

Yeah, I'm a bit surprised that our core skill is rated as 3rd. I'm also not SO surprised, as I've rarely edited a good translation, so much so I don't any more, although I do edit huge amounts of non-native authors (I guess the "fraud" perpetrated by "translators" just got to me ...).
So now I see, the priority is to learn CAT not to learn to write.

Are you sure? I'm not pointing at you personally, but I, in my experience, feel that few translators are truly, truly introspective about their core skill - writing, to the point where the blind spot is so massively huge that you see portfolio entries that are horrendous and links to websites with awful text (for example, the LAST thing I would do, as a person sensitive to language - and especially the language I write - would be to link to a website that is extremely unlikely to be in impeccable EN (or whatever) for a number of reasons, NONE of which are under my control...

I l(try to) learn things as I go, but of that list I don't see what matters ... yet I have work to early June, and almost always have 2-4 weeks work in hand. I focus on keeping life simple, doing jobs I like, in formats I like, for the price I like, for an availability that suits, etc etc

I agree with Lia Fail. "Speed" and "technology" get their fair share of training courses. Writing skills are not as frequently the subject of seminars or courses, especially the "non literature" type.
Languages would be another topic. Not necessarily a new one but their evolution, slang, colloquial, etc.

Yes, and given the evidence of really unskilled pseudo translation, I am concerned at how, through ProZ itself, we seem to be helping a few people, who are not linguists at all, to establish themselves as translators. Part of the definition of a profession is that it exercises control over entry in order to maintain professional standards. This should go hand-in-hand with helping people to attain and maintain those professional standards. So, writing skills in our target languages and specialist areas and knowledge of our source languages should always be prioritised over IT and marketing.

Yes, I entirely agree. We (and I include myself) should learn to translate better. For tools, a one-day training for each main tool is usually enough, but in the case of translation you never learn enough. I must admit that I rarely have time for training, but my first priority is becoming a better translator, not a better user of translation tools.
