Predominance of Europe... Nov 4, 2008

Wow, that was a surprise!! But perhaps it will balance out a little after more people have responded.

Good old Europe Nov 4, 2008

Why not? Financially looking good. Population beats US by over 250%, and there are about 230 languages spoken here with an immense need to translate between them (with an emphasis on EU languages).

Though strangely enough I have many customers in countries where neither English nor Spanish (my source/target languages) are spoken, such as France and Germany.

US pollsters otherwise engaged? Nov 4, 2008

This kind of poll may balance out as other time zones get going with their day, but on the other hand, many of our US colleagues may have important things to do today at the poll booths...

I had no problem to work for clients on other continents if they were ready to pay decent European rates.

Europe and North America. So I guess I'm Other for the day.
Happy voting to other US colleagues!

I've never had a job from outside of Europe... or even the EU as far as I remember...

So I'm quibbling. I think I may be in the minority in that 90% of my work is local.

I voted South America Nov 4, 2008

I have 1 very big South American client, ( so in size the majority is from there ). However, I do a lot of work for Europeans, ( I have more European clients ).

So, take your pick,

Nigel.

compare to living place Nov 4, 2008

I think it would be interesting to compare the results of this poll to the results of another one, with the same response possibilities, but the question: Where do you live/work?

A least, I'm curious about it

Hi Elisabeth Nov 4, 2008

There was a very interesting poll a while back: "Where in the world are you?".
I think you can read the discussion at this link:

http://www.proz.com/forum/poll_discussion/104656-poll:_where_in_the_world_are_you.html

It is indeed quite interesting to compare the results of both polls!

Biased question? Nov 4, 2008

I kind of thought this depended on two underlying questions:

1. Where are languages most dispersed?

2. Where are the biggest concentrations of computers?

I mean, I'm sure there's a lot of translation going on elsewhere, but you have to be online to answer this.

Wow! Nov 4, 2008

I'm amazed. I've only had one or two European clients since I began translating over a decade ago. Most of mine are in Brazil, and a few in the US and other places.

language pairs Nov 4, 2008

I work in french to english. That may be why I don't get much from outside north america. Perhaps in EU they translate more from french to OTHER languages. However, the demand for french to english seems to be mostly a North American thing. I have gotten a few jobs from Europe, the majority of my work is local, provincial, from other provinces or from the US.
