Mostly online - but sometimes I visit a library Nov 27, 2008

Like most colleagues who have replied up to this time (>75 %), I do the major part of my research online.
At times I refer to my collection of books / encyclopedias / articles / notes (hard copies!)
I used to visit a library once a fortnight - but these days its more like once a month.
Regards,
Venkatesh

I basically consult online dictionaries and google a lot. I also sometimes use the Google (automatic) Translator if I fail to find a term in the other online dictionaries.

What about software on our own computers? Nov 27, 2008

I have chosen online as it is closest to the truth, but it would be much better if there was an option allowing to distinguish between online resources and encyclopaedia/dictionaries installed on ones own computer.

Best Regards
Stanislaw

My own digital glossaries-> specialized paper dictionaries-> online resources-> client clarification Nov 27, 2008

In that order.

As I started translating several years before computers became accessible here in Chile, I have a huge collection of terms organized in separate files (e.g., financial/accounting, legal, IT, psychology/psychiatry, etc.) These continue to be my primary sources, so one of them is usually on screen.

As I started translating several years before computers became accessible here in Chile, I have a huge collection of terms organized in separate files (e.g., financial/accounting, legal, IT, psychology/psychiatry, etc.) These continue to be my primary sources, so one of them is usually on screen.

I don't know what I would do without my beloved Marina Orellana's English-Spanish/Spanish-English glossary! A number of monolingual and bilingual specialized dictionaries complete my collection of hard-copy resources.

For online research, I start by checking the Kudoz Term Search page (Warning: Handle with Care!) and Answers.com with its collection of online monolingual dictionaries is extremely helpful. Google Search, if appropriately configured, can be very useful in some cases, provided you don't lose sight of the fact that the Web is NOT a secure place for translators. I'm sure you, too, have found horrors in university sites.

Kudoz questions are my ultimate resource. It's SO GOOD to know that you guys are out there to help, particularly when I am having reading comprehension problems in my own native language --because none of my clients is what you'd call a good writer... So, if after getting some ideas from you I still cannot make up my mind which one to choose, I contact them (which, by the way, has earned me a very good reputation - they love it when you show concern!)

I hope to have given some good leads to our youngest colleagues

Happy translating, dear Prozians!

Paper dictionaries - is that "research" Nov 28, 2008

I did not think when answering this that looking something up in the dictionary was "research". I think of research as more detailed understanding of the subject, which is generally nearly all on-line, even if it is consulting a suitable person by e-mail.
