... as my office is in the family home, so it can range from nobody (+dog) to two (+dog)!

This reminds me of another poll about what kind of music, if any, we like to listen to while working. The number and nature of people around me do affect my ability to concentrate (work colleagues can be persuaded to pipe down, but no so the children and my husband's football on TV when I have to work at home).
But I have learnt over the years to be able to eliminate, within limits, surrounding noise, even without the use of headphones which I sometimes resort to. The problem is at ... In the morning I am mostly alone in my home office. My younger daughter, who visits a primary school, comes home between 11:30 and 13:15; the elder one finishes school between 13:00 and 15:00.
I find it difficult to work with the kids around, though they are mostly busy with their own stuff. Lately I had a tough deadline for an urgent job, and the kids kept on quarrelling with each other for nothing (in my opinion). Out of desperation I smashed a few dishes; the kids were quiet for... My husband and I both work from home, so we share an office in the house. We have our computers set up facing each other so we can occasionally consult with each other and see each other while we're working. It's nice.
Then sometimes it is me + 3, when our twin toddlers get away from the nanny and run into the office to find Mommy and Daddy.

If I work at home, where I live alone, on my desktop, there is just me (1). If I work in coffee houses where they have wireless Internet for my laptop, there could be up to about 25 people surrounding me. When I work in a public or college library on my laptop, there could be upwards of 100 people on the premises.
I like to get out of the house, get fresh air and exercise by walking across college campses and over sidewalks, that is, when I'm not doing a lengthy book translation, fr... Hello,
I live with my parents but I have my room so, I usually am alone when I am working, especially until lunch time (in my home 16.00) when my brother comes home, and usually in the afternoons or in the evenings plays on the computer in my room.
But am used to it, and he doesn't bothers me at ll. Actually, I think that it would be bother me if I there were more than 4 people in the room where I work.

... and I have eight of them! (Plus my youngest daughter...)
Of course, it's rare that they are all at home - they are mostly outside during the day, hunting lizards and grasshoppers or climbing trees. Cats, I mean, as my daughter grew out of lizard-hunting, but might occasionally climb a tree...

My husband works at home too. At the other end of the house, a long way away. He is constantly on the phone or talking to himself. Working in the same room would drive us both to distraction.
Otherwise, I only really attempt working when the children are out or asleep. Anything else is futile!

The good golden rule that really grasped my attention here, esp. from Mary Worby, is never to marry. I have to work sometimes with older freelance translators, who are married too, and just like you, and such a great noise you have to deal ... More important perhaps than their feedbacks and proofreading was that invisible lesson I learned ... "Marriage! Danger ... Keep out!"
