Yes, if I'm not available Dec 22, 2009

If I'm not going to be available for a few days, I usually send an e-mail to my regular clients, letting them know.

Sometimes I go away but take my laptop with me and am still available for work. In that case, I don't usually say anything.

Plus, I call them to organize my deadlines with them, according to my vacation

laptop = no vacation!
If it is the case, I don't say anything - depending on the time of the year, sometimes nothing comes in anyway, e.g. the days around 15/08 or X-mas long weekend...

Yes, out of courtesy I send out an email to let my clients know when I won't be available. I do the same even if it's because I'm booked up and can't take on any new work, not only when I'm on vacation. Sometimes there are some who will still contact me anyway but most do make a note of it. I don't use an automatic "Out of Office" type reply because in order to do so I would then have to turn off all group emails, and I can't do that every time.

if it affects my availability Dec 22, 2009

Then I let them know.
For example, I have family coming in for the holidays, so I'm taking some time off.

And I let some clients know even if I'm taking my laptop, because it does affect deadlines.

Clients that I deal with on an irregular basis don't get notified. I deal with them individually if it comes up.

usually they're the ones who inform me! Dec 22, 2009

most of them send me emails that they're closed from the 21. I usually let most of my clients know if i am nor am not available during the holidays. This year it seems most of my regular clients are closing down so I won't be hearing from them anyways!

Not really Dec 23, 2009

Like the rest of you, I rarely go on vacation. Looking back, I have usually been in touch with my main clients up to my departure time, so they will know through correspondence. But I don't have a list that I would send out a broadcast to.

I consider I am just being polite informing (regular) customers that I will not be available for a while, whether for a holiday, a "long week-end" or just because I am so busy that I cannot accept whatever they have to offer.

For the occasional time off during office hours, whatever the reason, those who write receive an automatic reply, possibly giving them an idea of when they may expect an answer.

I do this only for "humans" though, not for clients who have a full automatic system, with a portal, where I have to connect to know what they offer, with all details.

Week's Notice Dec 23, 2009

I do not take a vacation and occasionally if at all I do, normally I inform my regular clients well in advance which is a week. This allows them to modify their project cycles. I have noticed that it is appreciated much by each one of them.

I also have my auto responder ON informing them of the date of my return to the desk. We owe our regular clients at least this much.
