I don't think it would help Jul 1, 2010

I don't have a website and I don't think it would help if I had one.

Oops :) Jul 1, 2010

This is suspiciously similar to yesterday's poll, which suggested that having a website is not particularly useful for getting more clients.

Yes Jul 1, 2010

I have found some direct private clients via my website that I do not believe I would otherwise have attracted.

An effective filter! Jul 1, 2010

The biggest difference I've noticed since launching my site in March is that I've had far less inappropriate enquiries, which is something.

Those that contact me now seem to be better informed about my work and also have an image of me as a person, which makes communication easier right from the initial e-mail.

Mine is a freebie DIY site, both "stand alone" (some people find it directly via search engines) and a complement to my now simplified ProZ profile. It's conceived as a rather idiosynchratic brochure with virtual sofas and little alcoves to explore, and, like any good place to visit , has tea and cakes on the last page (which reminds me, I need to post the overdue summer update this week!).

Direct clients don't usually even know about websites such as ProZ.com

It certainly hasn't done so since I put up my website two years ago.

Yes, definitely! Jul 2, 2010

Many clients (and potential clients) have contacted me via email saying that they chose me, not only because of my skills and experience, but also because I have a nice and professional website with a good presentation. And many potential clients look at the website of the Swedish Association of Professional Translators to look for a new translator, and then they contact the translator with a website they find serious. And many potential clients look at the website of the Swedish Association of Professional Translators to look for a new translator, and then they contact the translator with a website they find serious. That´s what they told me, at least!
And I must say that there are surprisingly many that contacted me that way. So for me it has been useful!

And I agree - direct clients don´t know about ProZ and similar websites!

Many clients know how cheap it is to put up a website with your own domainname (like www.yourcompany.com), so they regard it as being professional if you have one (and not just a free under the ISPs domain). (Yes, I know that some of you may not agree, but it is a very common comment from customers.)

The only ones I don´t think would have use of a serious, professional website is the translators that have been in business for a long time, before Internet, and those who already have more work than they can handle. But that´s only my opinion!

thanks! Jul 2, 2010

Some very interesting comments have been posted, so thank you all for that!
And I'm sorry if the question may sound similar to one or some recent others, but when I posted it months ago, there was no way to know it, yet. It's turned out quite useful though. Cheers!

No Web site Jul 2, 2010

I started way before the Internet, Web sites and the like.
As I worked part time at the beginning, I never actually looked for customers, let alone “new customers”. I never advertised anywhere nor even sent my CV unless specifically requested to do so.
In my situation, I do not see the point in advertisement of any kind – to have the privilege of refusing even more offers than I do now?
Networking and nurturing good “personal” relations with my customers is the way I do it!

I think it has Jul 3, 2010

My client base has expanded considerably since I put up my website two years ago. THey may find me on ProZ, but then I think they check out the website for more details and to get a better sense of my professionalism.
