I imagined everyone uses some sort of AV software these days. It seems not.
There are 1,8% answerers who use none . I wonder what their secret is.
I use AVG. It's very good so far (three years and counting).

ESET Smart Security. But on one of my computers, it occasionally says "cannot connect to firewall" on startup, so I have added the Comodo standalone firewall.

It could be. Firewalls in many cases would be enough. I used to have a sluggish system and adding an AV simply means an endless series of error messages and a long-delayed response to my keyboard entry. You might experience any of these when you fall under the mercy of an outdated laptop. Any AV consumes a lot of system resources.
A geek might use a decent firewall only, and you will know about the virus location once it tries to leak through and connect to its developer (and it worked for me quite well, but of course it needs cautious usage of potential virus-carrying tools and systems). Even, you might install dual OSs, one with an AV and the other with a firewall only, and you may scan the first with the second's tool. This ensures safe removal of the virus without bothering yourself with these tiresome messages "Can't delete File. Make sure it is not used by another process or program" etc.

for average use but a slightly paranoid friend has told me that in business situations one should always do more with regards to computer safety so I have looked for an on-line service that looks at computer safety as well and found Secunia: it tells me on start-up what problems I might have (if any) and how safe my laptop is in comparison with other users in my region (to date 99% to 100%, for what it's worth).
I also scan my laptop every two weeks with CCleaner (fairly vigorous pr... I also scan my laptop every two weeks with CCleaner (fairly vigorous program) to get rid of any unwanted software (I quite often download trial versions if I have to zip a file or fiddle in Quark documents) and every once in a while I try another free of charge virus scan, preferably an on-line one from any respected antivirus-brand, to see of AVG has indeed caught everything.
Best defense against viruses is common sense, though: I never download anything I am not 100% sure is safe or trusted and I never open attachments from anybody I don't trust. I also receive notifications from a Dutch warning service (Waarschuwingsdienst.nl) so I feel I am pretty secure in my work environment.
On our desktop my wife and I used to have Norton 360 but it didn't stop a shut-down virus, so I got rid of that and installed Panda. Good enough for average use (my wife uses the desktop mainly for one particular on-line game, occasionally checks hotmail and, regrettably, visits a Facebook page from a friend - I can always tell when she has done that because there seems to be a free adware distribution service attached to Facebook). There too I scan with CCleaner every two or three weeks, mainly for the unwanted adware, and it seems to do the trick just fine. Avast took up too much capacity from the processor there so I am not fond of it and removed it from the desktop.
Regardless of what people do or have for preventing viruses, the best trhink to keep in mind that it is not a passive process and one should spend a bit of time on it to ensure one remains virus, adware and malware free.
