Acronyms and abbreviations that are (presumably) well known to somebody but can take half a day to track down if you haven't seen them before.

Hi,
Maybe I'm stupid, but what is :
a ltr word inside rtl text ???
And, first thing, is it "itr" (uppercase i) or "Ltr" (lowercase L) ?
As my two colleagues said, acronyms and abbreviations are the problem, indeed they are, even here

I believe, these are 'left-to-right' and 'right-to-left' texts and words.

Yes! Impenetrable acronyms and abbreviations are by far the most frustrating problem. I've compiled my own glossary of them over the years, but new puzzlers appear daily.

I agree about the acronyms - there are so many in France! Fortunately I don't encounter too many in my fields.
But for me it's flour: French flour types are not graded in the same way as British or American ones and soft and hard wheat flours just don't behave the same. Then there's French baking powder, which is nearly twice the strength of British.

I really hate documents which have copied and pasted images with text in them. You have to go into them by hand and change them. It really slows you down.
And i agree PDFs that can't be converted are a real pain. I generally refuse them.

My pet peeve in translation is the presence of text boxes, which you have to proofread and format separately and which don't enter the word count either.
I don't mind large blocks of text in boxes, but sometimes I get a number like "356.2" with the "356" in one box, the "." in another, and then the "2" in a third box. Other times, sentences are divided, so I may have "The name of" in one box, "the Marketing" in another, and "Manager is John" in a third box. And this is Word, not Pow... This is very time-consuming, especially as all the occurrences of "." (as a decimal point) have to be changed to "," when translating into Portuguese. Another point is that any "replace" operations do not include text in boxes.
I don't see why text boxes are used, the only reason I can think of is to make the figures neat in a table - but why "356.2" should be divided into three boxes is beyond me. ▲ Collapse
