It seems to me that this poll has been posted to advertise the ProZ.com virtual conference (why else add the word "free" to this particular option?)

It's not for the first time that I have an impression that these poll questions are somewhat marketing-oriented (and it seems to happen more and more often...).

Agreed. If it keeps up I'll stop looking at the polls, which means I'll be visiting this site a lot less.

I agree. Hidden agendas abound. The raison d'etre of the site seems to be increasingly market-oriented. I for one am fed up being plied with offers of advice on how to "market" myself and my services/skills like some sort of struggling streetwalker and "network" rather than just having a chat and a laugh with like-minded souls.

Firstly, International Translation Day isn't a ProZ event. It was originated by the International Federation of Translators in 1953 (according to wikipedia) and is also celebrated by PEN. As such, it could be seen as more of an event for literary translators than commercial translators.
It seems perfectly logical to me though for ProZ to arrange something to coincide with it. Call it marketing if you want, but what's wrong with marketing? I find some of the offers from ProZ interesting, others less so. If you join a site like this, you must expect to get such offers. I've bought stuff through amazon so of course they send me information about things they think I might be interested in. It only takes a few seconds to see if I'm interested or not - the delete button is right at my fingertips if I'm not. If you just want to chat, then just chat and ignore the rest. You chose to join ProZ and if it's not what you want, you can always choose to leave again. ▲ Collapse

St. Jerome is the Patron Saint of Translators, best known for his translation of the Vulgate from the Hebrew and Greek into Latin. September 30th is his day - and International Translators' Day, as it happens.
Interestingly St Jéronimo, as he is affectionately known in Portuguese lived from 347 to 419/420 A.D., whilst Domenico Ghirlandaio, the artist of this picture, wandered about Florence between 1449 and 1494. So, who knows what St Jerome actually looked like? Michelangelo was apprenticed to Ghirlandaio early on in his life, and the latter, apparently, painted one of the al frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Quick arithmetic tells us that St Jerome was 72 or 73 when he died. Not a bad age way before penicillin!

How to market myself? Provide high quality translations, timely delivery and good rates (for both parties) and the customers keep coming back for more.
