When it suits me! Can be weekend or weekday, special occasion, at the end of a very large project or when I run out of work... No fixed pattern.

Other - when I decide to Feb 4, 2012

I'm writing a book right now, so I have been taking off about two weeks every two months until it's finished.

When the emotions subside and the mood goes up. Feels like the best time to reward myself.

It's another of the many advantages of freelancing; for example, the supermarkets and stores tend to be busy at weekends and I dislike queueing so I prefer to do my shopping through the week.

I do tend to take some time off whenever I'm too ill to work, but even when in hospital I prefer to work if possible - I even worked despite a double wrist fracture once. And this year I'm taking a few days or maybe a week off in April or May to visit some friends in France who are throwing a party.

Like Muriel, I'm working on other projects. I just took a month off to spend some time doing this, and I just may follow Muriel's pattern at some point...sounds like a good solution.

whenever I can Feb 4, 2012

regardless of the day of the week! usually when it's busy and need to clear my head, I'll take a day off before starting the next thing.
Usually Fridays are quiet. I found that clients don't usually contact me with anything new on fridays and if that's the case, i take the day off.

Me too... I very rarely book time off, just take it whenever I'm able to.

Even when there's no work around, I'm usually not that far away from being called upon or getting involved with something. It's a bit like being on call.

...and taking a week off in early March to visit Vienna and Budapest (am so glad I'm not freezing there now!) but will have netbook with me to work if I need to. I feel like I am always "on call" to an extent but can't understand how some people can say they NEVER take time off!

Whenever I have to travel Feb 4, 2012

I have had to go to the US several times in the past few years due to poor health and deaths of my parents. Each journey takes around 40 hours because of the route I am forced to take (one day to cross the border to Jordan, another day actual flight time). Obviously, I cannot work on these days, but the Queen Alia Airport in Jordan inexplicably and miraculously has free Internet access (something airports in America and Europe should seriously consider), so I can at least check and respond to emails. These trips have been my major breaks in work and were usually quite sudden so I had no time to notify clients. Once in the US of course, getting back online and back to work is no problem.

I also occasionally take a vacation when my husband insists

A bit of all. I always allow myself one to two days off when I've finished a large project (50000 words and up). And I try to take at least one full day off each weekend where I don't even turn on the computer to spend with my family. (Not always possible the last weeks of a big project).

For the more than 5 percent the NEVER takes time off, I hope you have good health insurance and good mental hospitals where you live,,,

It really does depend on the workload. Definitely no fixed pattern.
