Thank you for participating in this poll.
As the answer you selected suggests, you have increased your rates for existing clients. Would you mind sharing how you did this and by what percentage? - Did you write them an announcement letter at the beginning of this year? How did they react?
I increased my rates, too, but started with new clients only.

Of course, I sent an email to my existing clients telling them of my new rates, which have increased by 1 cent, so it's not about them pulling their hair!

By 5 eurocents/line, just a little less than the index rise over the same period. I always send my customers a letter (with the invoice of the month) 2 months in advance, telling them about it and about the index rise.
My Canadian (direct) customer (prices there are in USD and because of the drop of the currency, they were paying less than European agencies) did not accept this at first but came back (not as often, true) after a while, mainly for proofreading - makes me think they are awa... I spread a rise over 6 months, working at the old rate for some customers while others get used to the new rates.
Other customers (international organisations) index rates automatically every year and, in my experience, they are rather generous.

I signed some new contracts with new clients that pay well. That made it possible to say no to some old ones. They of course got a mail telling them I was raising my prizes, just in case they wanted to follow my rise. Only one said "maybe". The others where just "shocked".
But hey - the result is still that I have higher rates!

I'm quoting US$ .01 more per word to all new clients. So far, they haven't questioned it - which makes me wish I'd done it sooner.
Finally! I hadn't raised my quote in 8 years, and sometimes I was caving in and working for less than my initial quote. I have enough well-paying clients now that I don't need to worry if I lose some of them. Time will tell whether I lose some of my old clients. | | | |

I consider my rates to be average for the market, have kept them the same for several years, and will try to continue to do so until the economic situation gets better and I think my clients can afford a hike. Although some taxes and costs are rising/have risen for me, it hasn't yet reached the stage where I feel that I need to put my prices up.

Why increase rates randomly on an arbitrary date? It makes no business sense. Increasing rates should be done continuously, whenever and wherever it can be done without jeopardising existing business. | | | |

I hadn't raised my rates for a couple of years, and I was still a way better deal than what agencies charged. I haven't heard from them in a while. I guess they decided to use someone who spoke French within the company for their translation needs, which is sad for them and me, as they probably have no translation experience and I had a long term relationship with the company.
