Immaculately messy Sep 2, 2012

The area around my computer and by extension my entire office can be best described as "systematically chaotic."

However, I keep the insides of my computers in tip-top shape.

Extremely. Sep 2, 2012

I may not know what those mysterious piles of paper hold that I haven't filed in more than a year but they sit on my desk in perfect geometry and in parallel arrangement. I am also one of those people who straighten out pens and lamp cords.

Yes, very clean! Sep 2, 2012

My brain needs order and cleanliness. The main thing I do every morning after a quick shower, breakfast and looking at my email is make sure my office is clean, that my desk has no clutter and all papers are filed or binned. Then I can sit down and focus on what is important: translating...

I run a duster over the screen and available surfaces when the dust annoys me, and this depends a little on the weather! But at least once or twice a week when there is sunshine, probably more, as the sun shines directly in for an hour each afternoon or evening.

Normally I take breaks and eat in the kitchen, but sandwiches and apples etc. do stray into my 'cage' when I am extra busy. The apples are accompanied by a damp tissue on the plate to wipe my fingers.

I NEVER have cups of coffee or food on the same desk as the computer and keyboard, (which means I never spill either, touch wood...) and if I drop crumbs, I wipe them up immediately. The excuse is that even during rushed jobs, I have to have clean hands and a non-sticky workplace. But Danes often eat their open sandwiches with a knife and fork, and I have seen the advantages.

I have just thrown away several kilos of paper records, which I can see I stopped filing about five years ago, but kept, just to be sure...
I have the equivalents on CDs and chips for the last five years. The floppy disks went along with the last computer that had a floppy drive.

Books are piling up on the floor, and that makes dusting difficult. It also upsets my system of having the most used in the most accessible positions, so the archives had to go to free up some space.

OK, there was a little dust at the back of the shelves, but I was actually surprised at how little! Anyone want a lot of blue ring-folders, clean and in nearly new condition??!

I agree with Julian 100%.

As in every artist, organzised chaos is in my genes. This, however, does not at all apply to the translator side of me.

If by "clean" you mean free from dirt, dust, stains and crumbs etc, well yes. If you mean tidy and organised, forget about it. But I do know where everything is!

I really try... Sep 2, 2012

...for example, today I even wiped the dust off my desk. Unfortunately, my desk is inside a farmhouse, and the farm that is outside is making every possible effort to come in.

When I get too busy to translate and fix that broken wheelbarrow at the same time as bottling green beans for winter (and that is usually when the horses break the fence once more), I end up in a huge mess of dust, spider webs and probably traces of manure on the floor, decorated by empty cans of energy drink

When I get too busy to translate and fix that broken wheelbarrow at the same time as bottling green beans for winter (and that is usually when the horses break the fence once more), I end up in a huge mess of dust, spider webs and probably traces of manure on the floor, decorated by empty cans of energy drinks, tea cups and chocolate packages on and under my desk. It helps keeping my eyes fixed on the screen to finish the darn job, though! (Who would want to set their eyes on that kind of mess - certainly not me!)

Different drums Sep 2, 2012

Each dances to his or her tune. For some exterior chaos belies interior calm. Then there are the cool cookies on the outside whose mayhem is interior. Others' exterior is an exact replica of what's going on inside. I mean, who really knows?

So much for the psychology! I keep stuff clean and tidy to avoid wasting time cleaning and tidying.

There's too much going on in my life for tidiness.

Not just a mess... Sep 2, 2012

My workspace is an impossible mess. However, my work is always done on time, my activities are well-organized, my bills are paid on time and that's what counts.
