Surpised to see I'm in the lowest slot here. Maybe it's because scientific writing tends to be a bit lacklustre, which gives me a chance to improve the text without having to worry about the core meaning/content.
I also enjoy business texts, but some can be time consuming if you want to avoid cliché or ad nauseam repetition.
PS: However, at the end of the day, beggars can't be choosers and I'm usually willing to have a bash at almost any area if I see the text as doa... I said other because I enjoy working in a multitude of fields and would feel stagnated if i have to work in one field all the time.

Hands down. Historical texts come in second, followed by academic texts in the arts and humanities and journalism.

I remember sitting at conference meetings with lawyers and accountants, the most execrably boring people on the planet, contemplating life outside a skyscraper, or maybe jumping out, bored senseless by interminable speeches of tax lawyers who have the personality of trodden snails, and having to recor... Certain funding issues in the department where I worked forced my unplanned, but eventually life-changing, expulsion from these companies, thus launching my freelance career. Ha! Hallelujah.
With science and engineering you at least learn something, provided you're curious about these things of course. Literature would be good in my spare time but there's no money in it and it takes too much time to churn out the right turn of phrase, which is crucial in literary translation. There are all kinds of pitfalls in marketing translation. My initial forays were replete with challenges from end clients who found my style inappropriate or wrong, and I always felt the heat from the translation agency involved. So no more of those for me, thank you.
With science and engineering your translation will stand on its own, provided it's based on good research. I can churn out engineering manuals like a washer-dryer, in out, more please.
I would love to translate websites and/or manuals related to sports and travel but those are extremely rare. ▲ Collapse

You've either got the flair for literary texts or you haven't. I definitely fall into the latter category and I just can't enjoy it if I can't do it well.

- Because that is how I feel at the moment!
But there should have been an option for 'several of the above' or 'a variety of things'.
Because after translating the patient records for a long, hard insurance case or a clinical trial or whatever, I simply need something different.
I also enjoy selling images for fashion clothing, or menus and recipes and all sorts of other jobs.

I am currently enjoying swapping between a long hard insurance case and descriptions of archaeological finds from a distant time and land.

I'm in the same slot, but I'm puzzled what do you mean by "to improve the text without having to worry about the core meaning/content"? I wouldn't dare to change the meaning of a scientific paper (or any other text).
