Maybe this is based on my language pair. If e.g. a major German car manufacturer prefers to contract an Asian agency, and such agency then expects a vendor in the US where prices and living expenses are identical to Germany to get the job done at Asian rates - sorry, guys. No can do. Learn math.

Like Nicole, I am not adjusting my rates to the lowest possible on this planet.
Why is it that the lowest rate I have ever been offered for J>E worked out to around less than $4/page (200 words)  and came from the largest country in Asia? Maybe this would work for some, however, I am not a shepherd in Outer Mongolia and have no intention of leading a nomadic life.

I would definitely pick Mars. Their travel agency NASA has great budgets, so I heard. In 2012 a budget of 18 billion for two little passengers. I will be happy to study Martian night and day!

Unlike in situation quoted by Nicole, in case of a few clients of mine from for instance Czech Republic - it is not a question of outsourcing translation to a different country. Quite frequently Czech (or Hungarian) companies treading with Polish ones conduct business in English, and subsequently assign translation of the final contract to a local translation agency.

We don't know yet. So far those little robotic guests up there behave like any other annoying tourist: They touch everything, they take pictures without asking for permission, they never leave a tip and - of course - they forgot their dictionaries at home.

...raise my rates up for clients out of the Euro zone who pay me by Paypal.
This way the increased rates would compensate for Paypal commission fees.

I don't understand. Following this logic we should charge our domestic clients less than our foreign clients for the same job? Overhead expenses should already be calculated, equally allocated and included in the rate.

I charge any one outside of Spain a higher rate. Firstly, because I can get the higher rate and secondly because it represents the extra liability that I am taking on.

First, if I insisted on my best rates with everyone, I'd have very few clients. I like to keep a full roster "just in case." I may charge less when I am interested in the work and I know that rates in the country are low.
