I worked in medicine and then in IT before becoming a freelance translator, so on average it is about the same. However, now that giving myself a raise is my own responsibility, the progression is definitely faster!!

I retired as head of the translation service in an international organization after years of seniority. My freelance income since then has been growing steadily, but it still doesn't match the level of my earnings as a staff professional.

I earn about a half of what I did when I was the vice principal of a large secondary school with one particular additional stress (my relationship with my boss - enough said). That's not all that's gone down. My blood pressure is down, my weight is down, my stress level has gone down so far it would be impossible to quantify.
Other things have gone up: The amount of exercise I take, the time spent doing things I enjoy (that includes translating), the number of vacations I take - my overall... but only because I can mess around with tax more, such as having a "company car" which you have to pay for privately if you do not have your own business, all communication stuff runs on the business, plus loads of other stuff, so the earnings are a bit more, but the benefits are much more!

And I don't even mess around with tax. If I did that I might even be able to say "much higher"...
But money isn't everything anyway and since my quality of life is so much higher as well, I'm quite content.

My answer was "Other N/A" since I've always been self-employed. Nothing to compare my income with
Over the years since Japan's go-go bubble economy heydays, I've seen my income decrease gradually. Probably due to a mortgage and putting two kids through Uni (youngest still in Med School) The situation this past year or so was also aggravated by a hand injury which stills prevents me from typing properly. I agree with Inkweaver, money isn't the be-all and end-all for me. The freedom, being able to tell the world to take a running jump if need be and not needing to travel anywhere to work every day make it all worthwhile for me. The earnings are the cherry on the cake.

I worked for 20 years as in-house translator at a European institution and, like Muriel, my income has been growing, but still it has not achieved the same level.

Long time ago I worked as interpreter for Italian companies, and I really had a good living...Nowadays after lot of studies ( for being translator interpreter for English) I have to struggle a lot...not so well. But the times are really different.

My income as a freelance has not reached the most I earned as an employee, and is unlikely to. However, like others who've posted here quality of life has improved dramatically since that high-earning period and I wouldn't swap back for all the tea in China. To be fair, it was that high earning period which enabled me to get started in my current life (location, employment), so it was worth it at the time.

As the sole income earner in our home at the moment I work 7 days a week to try and maintain our family. I've been translating for over 8 years so I can't really remember what I was earning before this. My overall earnings have increased enormously in the last year but I find I am always working in one way or another. It's all good though!

I was a freelance journalist/editor before turning to translating/editing. I actually do better now as there is more work for translating, editing and business writing. I know a few journalists who have done the same thing, including one who went to my journalism school. She now has a small agency and I've worked for her occasionally. We both agreed that we're doing much better as translators.

...actually higher in average per month, but I have often problems with late payments. Therefore it is not a big step forward
