For *my* profile, I think a recent picture of what I perceive to be my "normal" face is best. I changed my photo a couple of days ago because it has been about a year since I last updated it, and I seem to have acquired a few more character lines since then.

Note added:
I can see now that Thayenga has responded, that "portrait" will probably be interpreted as being the kind of photo a professional takes of you in a studio. If that is the case, I should have said "casual", since I prefer good amateur photographers who know me to take the picture, although, these are not taken expressly for the purpose of emblazoning them on ProZ, or other sites.

I think an actual picture of the person in question is best, be that a casual portrait or a formal one. You can go too casual, obviously, I think perhaps a pint of beer in hand is not a good look for a professional website. But equally, I think pictures of children or pets do not create the right image either. It's one thing on Facebook, it's another here.

Yes, Allison, to me a portrait is a "headshot" taken by a professional with no "distracting" background. This "interpretation" is strictly personal, so I don't mind at all when/if our colleagues disagree.

Well, it depends.... if someone specializes in brewery equipment and/or in beer sales, such a photo might attract clients.

I agree with you here, Mary. And you never know who will see your photo! There are a some "not so nice" characters cruising through cyber space. Don't want to give them any "funny ideas" by displaying a photo of your children... I suppose.

It's none of anyone's business what I look like, especially as I am unlikely to meet most of my clients in person.
I always think I look a bit dodgy anyway - I bust a front tooth last week and I hope to get that sorted soon, because my mouth currently looks like a set of burglars' tools...

Must be because it's Sunday morning and too early to go the market, but this post has made me take closer looks at everybody's photos!
I vary: sometimes I have a casual portrait, other times I have birds or flowers.
However, I dislike "talking" to people who have no image at all on their profiles.

Casual sends the wrong message to clients, even casual clients.
People want to see what you look like. It's part of selling yourself. I find cartoons, children, and pets very irritating. I always think the person has something to hide.

I would definately say that David and Muriel's photos are examples of the best kind of photo to include on your profile. They look very professional, IMO.

Even worse is a silhouette. I do not like getting invites from faceless people without a background or site to corroborate who they are. And, in more cases than not, they start off "Hi, Julian" which is really, really irritating.

I always like to see who I am "talking" to and I guess it goes for other people too (clients or colleagues). Imho, other options (pets, kids, cartoons...) may be understood as a lack of professionalism. And why should anyone send a personal message here? I am sure clients/colleagues are not interested in our pets or our favourite cartoons:-)
P.S. I think full first name and surname are also important in terms of being taken seriously though it's not a rule, of course.
