Hands-on experience - BUT . . . Dec 22, 2012

Feedback from colleagues has been very important to me. While I honed my skill through hands-on experience, it was my colleagues on an in-house team who taught me the basic principles.

These are big motivators for how you tackle your translation projects -- if what you deliver to your customers is not what they were expecting or wanted, you will have a hard time after the delivery satisfying them.
After all, they are the ones forking out the spondoolicks and setting the bar, or the performance indicator, at the same time. So, it's in our interests to keep 'em happy. Mind you, there are stupid and unreasonable monster customers out there, too.

The lesson here, grassphoppers, is to try and figure out exactly what they want before you undertake a project. Once you know this, you have an index or reference to gauge and align your professional performance to.

Otherwise, I've earned my wings by clocking the hours. Now, all you have to do is motivate yourself and the rest should be plain sailing, theoretically, that is.

All of the above but... Dec 22, 2012

... my formal training (an MA in interpreting and translation) and hands-on experience are the most significant contributors. Plus an aptitude for languages which goes without saying...
