I rarely make plans, which avoids me feeling frustrated when for reason or other they don't work out. For one reason or other, usually but not always due to work commitments, I have missed the last 4 or 5 pow-wows and similar events I had pencilled in. This makes me reluctant to book or commit to almost anything in advance. My approach now is to seize the chance when it crops up and just attend spontaneously on the day, if possible.

This is the same answer I gave in the poll also posted by "anonymous" on October 28, 2012 titled, would you believe(!):
How many translation-related events do you attend, on average, each year?
I think "anonymous" has a liking for the repetitive.

In Edinburgh we organise translators' meetups every couple of months, usually just drinks but we've also had 2 summer barbecues and 3 Christmas parties. The next event is on March 21st, if anyone would like to sign up!

I don't know whether this would count as a "translation-related event", but a club called Polyglots has recently formed in Penzance which meets in the back room of a pub each Thursday evening. There are tables for various languages, depending on who turns up, at which people converse in the corresponding language - the standard varies greatly but the meetings are surprisingly well attended considering that this is a smallish town remote from any large cities. And it's fun.

There's a two days seminar in May I will be attending. And then there's a few more I'd be interested in, but don't know yet if I I'll manage to attend them.
Other than that there's a monthly meeting organized by my Translator Association.

Yet another in an endless stream of examples of repetitive poll questions (as Julian has pointed out).
To me, the more interesting questions here (not for a psuedo-poll but perhaps as a forum topic for extended and thoughtful discussion) have to do with the expectations and benefits of those who attend such events. Are these mainly social in nature (i.e., a chance to shoot the breeze with colleagues one doesn't otherwise see) or financial (i.e., networking opportunities), some combi... For the purposes of such a discussion, it would also seem to make sense to distinguish between small informal events (e.g., pow-wows, barbecues, hayrides, and the like) from the more expensive multi-day congresses.

I plan to attend the Seaside PowWow and the ProZ Brazil Conference, also maybe a course or two and possibly a Panquecada (FB translators' get-together).

I cannot speak for others, but for me the main reasons to attend such events are the educational benefits, the networking and, yes, sometimes the pleasure of "getting out of the house while still doing business". I simply don't have the time to attend an event for "just" social reasons. ;D

I have three translation events planned and regret that I cannot attend more. I will be going to the CATI (Carolina Association of Translators and Interpreters) Conference in Wilmington, NC in late April, the Translation Triple Conference in Kentucky (last day is a tour of Bourbon country - who's with me?) in August, and, of course, ATA in San Antonio in early November.
