Offer more services Jan 27, 2013

I entered the above, because my principal goal for this year is to change to another main language pair, while continuing, at least for the time being, to offer a service in my current main pair.

I would have voted "Take Over The World", but the option was not provided.

Find more, better clients Jan 27, 2013

Actually, I would like to change from collaborating with agencies to working for direct clients, and be able to increase my rates. And specialize more in my areas of interest.

Little to add except that I don't see any likelihood on the horizon.

Keep going Jan 27, 2013

Workwise, all I ask is to be able to continue as I have for the past couple of years. I have sufficient work volume coming in from my current clients and my hardware and software still works as well as I need it to, so I really can't think of anything...
I just hope I don't get dragged into any more unwelcome "upgrades" by the SW providers in the near future, as I'm still fuming about the last "improvement" they forced upon us.

Work aside, I am currently taking lessons and trying to get my Spanish driving licence, which has been a real eye-opener.

Focus on specialised area Jan 27, 2013

Ideally, I'd like to solely translate art-related topics combined with opening a jewellery business, but I think it'll be a combination of medical and legal translation, art work and teaching.

Get ready to retire Jan 27, 2013

I want to focus on making a lot while I still can so that I will have a cushion when I can't any more.

Worldwide crisis is an important issue. I do not have a magic ball, but we have to avoid being pessimistic about future. Only translators who will become accostomed to changes will survive. Retirement is - fortunately or unfortunately - far away from my horizon, so I have to deal with economic trend, new software, market changes, etc...

Retirement is - sort of - looming up for me too, but I am not ready to drop the career yet!

Keep on an even keel, keep my skills up to date, survive the inevitable upgrade of my computer once more, and hope the new one will last my time out!

I have admitted a long time ago that I am a loner and hate administrative work, so I am not interested in outsourcing and starting teams and agencies. I work at full capacity most of the time, so I have no ambitions about expanding.

Clients come and go, so I make an effort to keep up with the ones I like for as long as possible. That is nothing new!

I do know! Jan 27, 2013

I'd love my business to work. I had a break due to my son's birth and maternity leave during which I didn't waste my time but trained myself even more and did some small projects for agencies as well as voluntary projects. However, now I'd love to work more and enjoy it to the fullest. I just love this job.

Secondly, I'd love to translate a book, which I kind of embarked on and was in the process of translating a very interesting spy novel, but as you know money rules and the publishing house gave up on it. Even the editor who wished to work with me couldn't do much. Shame, but what can you do...
As to the retirement as some of you mentioned, I think it doesn't ever happen for us translators
