I think setting a target of any kind is imperative - and not just to cover your monthly expenses. It gives you something to aim for. I have a target for the year, but mainly because I am relocating to another country to study. I also have monthly goals and I have made a wishlist of my cashflow for the year.

Like Tatty, I have a monthly target which basically allows me to cover my overheads plus a little extra. Once I have reached that target everything else is a welcome bonus.

As others have said, I have a monthly target. I need to exceed this some months to compensate for August, which is when most of my clients close shop, and I go on holiday. I keep a very close eye on this target and adjust expenditure if work is not going to plan.

I can say I have an average monthly target, or better a monthly target which is dependant upon close months' turnover.
I see Italian market is in a deep crisis, and therefore this year is envisaged to be a bit tough. But this does not stop me from being optimistic, and do all my best to get new opportunities.

I have a monthly target, but as obviously some months are better than others (that’s the name of the game when freelancing) I have learned over the years to take each day as it comes...

I am just starting up my business and hope to double my income compared to last year. My income last year wasn't terribly big, mind you, so I hope that this is achievable

Target schmarget. My aim, as ever, is simply to reach the end of each month/year with my bills paid, no debts and some disposable cash left over. As my mother used to say, "enough is as good as a feast".

Instead of spending time on setting (fictitious) income targets, I'd rather spend that time working and... make this income materialize.

That's what keeps me going. I'm inherently lazy, and working toward these targets keeps me sitting at my desk until I've met them.
I should add that these are minimum targets. I often exceed them, and that always gives me a good feeling.
