I was active in the American Translators Association for many years, but since I turned freelance 20 years ago, I haven't had the time.

to be able to do that here in England I would have to travel to London every week. So I only attend webinars and on-line specialisation courses.

whenever I have the chance.
I am lucky to live in Berlin where a lot of interesting seminars, workshops and meetings take place. And I always enjoy to learn something new and to meet colleagues. An interesting seminar or workshop helps me to recharge my batteries and sometimes new ideas or interests develop.

Highly recommendable - the people you will meet are incredible. I don't care much about the speeches - spending hours with great colleagues and the exchange is priceless. Highly intelligent, top-notch elite that will make you fall in love with your profession all over again.

I'd definitely love to - there aren't many that take place here in South Africa, but once I move to other areas of the world, such events should be more accessible.

See, those are the places I want to travel. That's what makes Powwows all over the world so tremendously beautiful - there are people who know what you do, who speak your language, who will show you around and who will make you will feel like home.
It can't be more expensive than traveling half around the world from the Pacific coast to visit one of the most expensive countries in Europe such as Germany, I guess. Last time I went there for one week together with my husband for a Powwow, it cost me nearly US $6000.00. For this amount, I can also travel other places all over the planet, I guess.

It was easier in France. Everywhere's a major trip from Fuerteventura, and I can't imagine anything much being held here, though I'm sure you'd all have a great time.
But I'll be at the ProZ.com Conference in Portugal in June, so I hope to see some of you there.

I'm really busy as a freelancer, but I still think it's so important to get out there and meet fellow professionals. I answered "sometimes", but I try and go to the ITI conference every other year and have recently been to a Chemistry for Translators workshop to update my technical knowledge, with a biotechnology one due to follow shortly. Quite apart from the technical content, it's lovely to meet other translators and exchange views. Ours is such an isolated profession we should take every opp... I was tempted by this year's ProZ conference in Portugal, but it comes hot on the heels of the ITI conference in May, the ITI walking weekend in June and a few other personal commitments like visiting my student son in Valencia, so I'll have to give it a miss this year. I've really enjoyed the other ProZ conferences I've attended, though, and would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone who's wavering! ▲ Collapse

I'm shocked so few attend meetings, workshops etc. To a certain extent, I can understand the distance issue (I have lived in a remote area myself), but I can't understand how you can work without real-life contact with colleagues, customers and others. Are translators really that hermitic? And besides, I don't buy that "I-don't-have-time excuse". Don't translators have a life apart from work? Are we not allowed? Are translators all introvert nerds who rely on online interaction only? I'm shocked...
