Chance would be a fine thing. Any little "extra" extra I had managed to put by has all gone in the past 6 months on traffic fines, legal fees and driving lessons to get a Spanish licence. However, that's all out of the way now so I'll have to buckle down and start again from scratch...

I don't have a separate emergency/savings account yet, but I do try to save every month and the amount in my only (!) account keeps growing. It's a very simple system at the moment.

Same here. I've actually had it since I was at Uni because I always need to know I have some money for a rainy day. And now that I am a freelancer it's even more crucial. I have to admit I don't have a plan, though. I'm always trying to put more money to my "rainy day bank account" when I prolong it (or open a new one with better rate) but it depends on a lot of things and sometimes I have it just for the sake of %.

Without it - no sleep. I make sure I have enought money in a separate bank account to cover several months without work. What if something happens? I could break the bones i my hand - no typing - no money. It scares me to know that some of you live without extra funds.

I have several insurance policies and a pension plan. If I didn't have to pay for those, I might have enough for an emergency fund

Whilst fully agreeing that an emergency fund is essential to cover those delayed payments and lean months, I can heartily recommend Dragon voice recognition software to cover the eventuality of breaking your wrist - or severe repetitive strain injuries, which is what triggered me to invest in it some years ago. It really is worth its weight in gold. Probably better to learn how to use it before you absolutely have to though!
And yes, I do have a rainy day fund - I try to have at least six months' income in there just in case, but having just treated myself to a new bathroom, it's rather depleted, so I'd better get doing some more work! When I had swine flu a few years back and was out of action for at least 4 weeks, it was so good to know that I did have money put away to keep me going.
However, if only the agencies who make so much money through our labour would do something and to put aside a bit of their profits to support aging or aged translators who have served them long and through thick and thin.
Also, the government which dips so freely into our hard-earned money would step in to support self-employed people like us, who help society by not burdening the transport system and other infrastructure by working from home.
