For my taxes. I keep all the records during the year, but then he makes sense of them at tax time.
I use an umbrella (portage) company. They have an accountant so I effectively have the services of an accountant but I don't have (or pay) one myself.

That answer was missing. Actually I should say, "Yes, and he really earns his wages, because what he makes me save / recover from taxes is far superior to what I pay him." I worked without an accountant for 10 years and now that I have one, I'm so happy about him!
and she is worth every penny I pay her!

I thought I would be able to do everything myself but it is now time to surrender to the German tax system and get an accountant. Should have done that years ago, I guess...

Yes, I definitely have an accountant.
My husband retired a couple of years ago, and does my accounts - he always has. He used to be the CFO of a medium-sized export company, and would not dream of letting me send off an invoice, let alone a tax return, without checking it himself.
And with good reason. I have no head for figures, and making out my invoices is a pain. So if for any reason my husband is not able to sort out my acounts and finances as long as I need him, I... See more Yes, I definitely have an accountant.

And with good reason. I have no head for figures, and making out my invoices is a pain. So if for any reason my husband is not able to sort out my acounts and finances as long as I need him, I will go running to the nearest reliable accountant who can take over. It is not mandatory here, but a very good idea.
Before I met my husband, I managed my student finances by the 'teapot method'. (My father had a tale about a man who kept his money in a teapot.) I used the bank instead of the teapot, but if there's money there, you're OK, and if not, you have to do without. Unfortunately that doesn't entirely satisfy the Danish tax authorities! ▲ Collapse

Meanwhile I do it myself.

I could do it myself, but the time she saves me is well worth the money - and there are fewer queries from the revenue office when they know the tax return has been filed by a professional.

numbers are not definitely easy to handle, especially when it comes to taxes and saving money. I prefer to spend my time working in something I can master, get paid accordingly and outsource tax related tasks. I do my own invoices, sure, but it would take me ages to do all the tax related paperwork and still would be unsure about the outcome... Better to spend that time translating
