I never work at night. May 12, 2013

These days I wake up early in the morning and by 6pm my brain is done.

Yes May 12, 2013

It has happened that I dream at night about projects I am working on if I'm stuck on a word and once or twice (maybe more) I even dreamt about the solution...

But not often, and I don't often remember dreams anyway. Too much to do in the waking world!

I always dream about Roy Orbison, myself.

And I, being poor, have only my dreams... May 12, 2013

I dream up better translations for difficult phrases. I also usually have mini-nightmares that I had made a mistake in a translation, but I had already sent it out to the client.

It's normal for me to dream about work, just last night I dreamt that my wife and I started a business shipping bananas to Alaska.

The multilingual garbled mish-mash of sleep-talking I am told I do when I have a heavy workload would suggest that I do process what I am working on at some level while sleeping. I have no recollection in the morning of what I was saying, or the subject of the mutterings!

The multilingual garbled mish-mash of sleep-talking I am told I do when I have a heavy workload would suggest that I do process what I am working on at some level while sleeping. I have no recollection in the morning of what I was saying, or the subject of the mutterings!

But then, two years ago, when I worked on a De-En project spanning five months, I went to sleeping thinking (and I am told speaking during the night) in Portuguese only. I tried to alter this pattern by reading English poetry (a favourite activity of mine) before sleeping, but the Portuguese pattern persisted. I think this was my brain's way of keeping sane for all the De-En during the day.

Before going to sleep I consciously relax and distance myself from the day's activities. I normally sleep very well indeed. My dreams are most often very visual, and image-based rather than language-based, and sometimes have a nice dash of symbolic colour.

Like others, if I have been grappling with a translation problem, very often the solution occurs to me shortly after waking, but without my being aware of having dreamt about it.

Fortunately, touch wood, I have so far been lucky enough to have avoided any such nightmarish projects!
