And those are literary translators May 13, 2013

I wouldn't expect to be able to name interpreters and translators of other types of text because they should not be noticed!

Many famous philosophers who translate philosophy books and papers.
One of them was my mentor in grad school.

One? May 13, 2013

The only one who springs to mind is Patrick O' Brian, one of my favourite authors, who was a translator in an earlier existence (he translated "Papillon", for example). He makes occasional reference in his excellent (historical, naval) books to the poor status and conditions of translators in those days, which apparently has not changed much since the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries!

Luther, who by translating the Bible into German also more or less created/defined the German "Hochdeutsch".

One off the top of my head May 13, 2013

Only one, but I suppose as a cultured person I should know a few more.

William Tyndale (1494-1536) Biblical translator and martyr; born most probably at North Nibley (15 miles south-west of Gloucester), England, in 1494; died at Vilvoorden (6 miles north-east of Brussels), Belgium, Oct. 6, 1536. Tyndale was descended from an ancient Northumbrian family, went to school at Oxford, and afterward to Magdalen Hall and

Jerome, everyone's heard of him surely?

In France, Baudelaire is known not only as a great poet but also as the translator of Edgar Allan Poe. Apparently Poe sells more in France than in any other country.

I try to take an interest in who the translator is whenever I read a translated book that I like, but as time passes, I tend to forget the names anyway. I find it quite surprising people can't name more, though. Is it because they don't consider their favorite translators to be "famous"? Or is it true that even we, as fellow translators, don't care enough about who did a translation?

Off the top of my head, none at all.
Maybe Umberto Eco? He certainly writes enough about translation in "Mouse or Rat", which I've tried repeatedly to read and understand over the years, albeit unsuccessfully. I just can't seem to grasp what he is getting at 80% of the time, which makes me feel stupid, which in turn discourages me from taking it further.

Quite a few May 13, 2013

I can name quite a few well-known literary translators, as well as a couple of historical characters responsible for biblical translations, and eminent translation scholars. However, as for the massive army of unsung heroes, translating complex technical, medical, business or legal texts all day every day, there seems to be very little 'fame' to be had.
