Depends a lot... May 29, 2013

quite simply on how much work I have accepted.

Some weeks feel like 8+ days if I work late or burn the candle at both ends.

However, I do find that weekends are quality work time -- very few phone calls, e-mails to answer or other disturbances, which means that I can steamroll through lots of work uninterrupted.

Concept doesn't fit May 29, 2013

The concept of a "business week" doesn't really fit into a freelancer's pattern of work, does it? (Only loosely).

I find that my working patterns are far too fluid to be defined by that concept, and no two weeks are ever quite the same.

I am open for business during normal business hours GMT and CET Mondays to Fridays, but this does not preclude business interactions earlier in the morning or after close of day - within reason. Occasionally, I am as flexible as I can be with clients in either North or South America, but this is not the norm.
I say 5 days, because on the weekend I do not pay much attention to my e-mails ordinarily.
My working week may be shorter or longer than that, depending on my workload.

Last week's working week was about 4.5 days fitted into 3 actual days.

8 days May 29, 2013

I know it is a secret, but if you just start working one day early every week, you can easily extend your business week to 8 days.

Just go for it.

It's a really bad idea, but I have tried working two weekends in a row without a break in between.

You DO have to take an extra day off or three after a stint like that.
What's the point of earning a living if you don't have a LIFE?

I generally ignore clients at weekends unless by special agreement.

But in fact my working week is very elastic. I work late in the day as a rule, the number of days and hours it takes...

6 days May 29, 2013

I always try to reserve Saturdays as a play day, but it doesn't always work out like that. Officially I only work from Monday to Friday. As I am still studying for my specialisation, I can take a whole week off too for study purposes. But I will be glad when I finally finish my studies.

Yet summer is approaching fast, and I just can't work weekends in July or August, so I will be aiming for a 4.5 day week.

7 days ? May 29, 2013

Like the proverbial piece of string, it tends to be as long as it needs to be.
I claim to be available 24-7, but nobody has ever called me at four in the morning with an urgent request...

5-ish May 29, 2013

I usually try to take 2 days off in every 7 days. It usually works, but if and when necessary I can save free days for the next week or, occasionally, forget about them altogether. A working week is rarely 9-5 Mon-Fri though.

It varies May 29, 2013

The length of my "business week" (since we, as freelancers, hardly ever have a "real" business week) depends almost exclusively on my clients.

It did happen a couple of times that a business week held 8 or 9 days with only "nap breaks" in between. The slower work weeks consist of perhaps 3 or 4 days, that is translating. But these "blank" days are filled with administrative work such as invoicing, accounting, research, attending seminars and being active here at ProZ.com and my Tran

Used to be 7 if necessary May 29, 2013

My working week used to be seven days if necessary but I would also take the occasional long weekend off. I now try and keep it to six but am usually studying on the seventh day. Whatever happens I'm not working the weekend after next - off to Oporto for the Proz conference

When necessary, May 29, 2013

I work half day both Saturday and Sunday.
The rest of the week is elastic, and I still don't have as much work as I would like.

It would be more fun to start it one day late and reduce it to six days a week! After all, we don't live to work, but work to live. When do we live in an 8-day week? Have you thought of that?
