If it's for within Spain... Jun 12, 2013

... I shall soon be sending my digital signature for many documents. A few hoops to go through first (including the fact that in the office here they don't seemed to have cottoned on to the fact that we no longer have physical id cards as EU residents of Spain), but I am looking forward to the new era.

E-mail AND send Jun 12, 2013

Here in France, bits of paper rule. I e-mail it so whatever is going on can get started and send a printed version by mail to satisfy legal requirements.

But I'd love to learn about ways of reducing the time taken by all this. Apart from anything else, printing a document just for this reason seems a waste of paper to me.

Other Jun 12, 2013

After my initial spluttering rant and muttered invective, I usually just print, sign and snail-mail the blessed thing.

To the best of my knowledge, the NIF (Tax ID nº in Spain) can function as a "non-secure electronic signature" and many of my clients now accept this type of "signature" on bills and similar documents. Other organisations however still insist on either the full-blown, "jump-through-too-many-absurdly-timewasting-hoops-to-obtain" electronic signature, or the old-fashi

Other organisations however still insist on either the full-blown, "jump-through-too-many-absurdly-timewasting-hoops-to-obtain" electronic signature, or the old-fashioned John Hancock.

As for the Catch-22 situation Noni mentions, now in force since some bright spark decided to stop issuing foreign residents with an ID card, I'll leave my effing and blinding response to the collective imagination...

PS: Some clients also ask for a "company seal", so a few years ago one of my friends had one made up for me as a jokey birthday gift. It's just a stamp with my name, service provided and tax ID on it, which anyone could knock up in a few minutes, so to assume that this somehow legitimises or authenticates anything at all is laughable, but there you go...

Fax Jun 12, 2013

Since I haven't yet learned how to use my scanner, I print it out, sign it and fax it.

..think "Oh no, not another bunch of pen pushers!" Jun 12, 2013

Since I have been recruiting new clients over the past few months, I have found a strong inverse relationship between the amount of forms to fill in and the amount of well-paid work received.

NONE of my good customers hassle me with this kind of nonsense, only the cut-price brigade from Bottom Feeders 'R Us!

I use a scanned signature, and I also have a color fax machine Jun 13, 2013

2) What's wrong with fax machines? It is faster than scanning. Especially with technical texts that have to be approved by various departments and usually sport various handwritten notes by three different people in three different ink colors, I wish to receive a 4-color version.

Since you asked, you can get a colour laser multifunction centre (MFC) that prints, scans, copies and faxes, and fits on top of a desk, for under $500, so there's no economic argument here.

FWIW, I've never worked out how to use the fax function and it's never been a problem. But each to their own!

MM

PS My favourite new toy is a feeder scanner that will scan up to 15 pages a minute. Fantastic for digitising paper records, and yes, faster than a flatbed scanner for multiple-page docs.
