It depends, on who is asking me what, when. Also very important: where will I be...in a hotel, a tent...abroad or in Holland.

I said no, but I do accept jobs offered me while on holiday for which I can negotiate a deadline to allow me to start the job as soon as I return. This happens quite often.

If I have my laptop with me (long trip), if it is a short translation and I am sure I can meet the deadline, I usually accept the job.

Holidays and translating don't mix for me. I usually have a packed agenda when I'm either back in the UK visiting family or visiting a destination of my choice.

The traditional long Summer school holiday is a relic for me since my children are grown up and left the nest. My holidays consist of long weekends (or even weekdays) whenever possible…

When I take holidays I turn my out-of-office email alert on and off I go. I do have a couple of ongoing jobs I've been working on for years, which are typically short articles, and I have translated some of these while on holidays, but that's it.
Just because we're always connected these days doesn't mean we're always available. A holiday is supposed to be a break from work, after all!

I also turn on my out-of-office notification when I am on holiday and, like others, whether I accept a job to work on while on holiday depends, amongst other things, on where I am. If I am constantly on the move, or in a tent, then it's really not possible.
Special circumstances, for me means special client, and only if they are in a real pinch.

My view may be more flexible if I were working with end customers relying on me specifically and if I couldn't team up with a suitable alter ego, but my holiday hourly rate would then certainly be insane.
One of the benefits of working with agencies only is that they (should) have contingency plans. I can safely do a grand disconnect after sending advance OoO notifications. I have never committed to any kind of 24/7 availability to anybody.

It's a holiday here tomorrow (long weekend) but i have a short editing job lined up. As long as I can manage a deadline, doing small jobs is ok. And during xmas holidays, i don't have problems taking on jobs if I'm in town.

... on the time of the vacation (holiday) and on the client as well as on the urgency of the project(s).
If my vacation is nearing its end or is just begining, then I want to enjoy it. In these cases I accept jobs with a very comfortable deadline, and only from one or two of my clients.
Holidays, public or religious, are considered normal work days.

When I started out, I worked at home, had the children in the local creche, had a cool office space at home. However, the house was open-plan, all spaces communicating freely. Not ideal for a separation of business and personal lives. I could inform my clients I was "on holiday" but they would suppose I could still work. Grr. Separate telephone numbers, separate e-mails did not stop them from tracking down my personal number and contacting me to work.

Finally rented an office "in town", the then town being a small Breton fishing harbour. Nice. Clients considered that my lifestyle meant I was on holiday all the time so I was available all the time. Wrong. Once I took the separate office, it did change quite a lot in my clients' approach to my hours. In fact? I still had the same business number I'd had at home but the message had got across.
If I decided to sneak into the office to do paperwork during my holiday time, that was my business. When I was on holiday, I was on holiday.
I'm in a town now and working differently, much less as I am also studying and working part-time in a lycée. And in answer to the question posted, then no, I do not accept work when on holiday.

I always take a couple of weeks in Greece every year (off in a couple of weeks, in fact) and I don't do any work in that time - it would defeat the object of the exercise! I notify my regular clients, but check my email every couple of days or so and will book work in for when I return, giving myself a day of grace to unpack etc.. I don't take my laptop, I need a break from staring at a screen all day!

I still have vivid (read "unpleasant") memories of receiving reams of FAXes from the office (when I was a company and employing people) arriving at the hotel in Bali -- yes, that paradise Bali! -- and me having to FAX them back during the day to meet a deadlne for a publication I was getting translated.
