1. I don't need it
2. I don't know about it
3. It will be surpassed by something else before I even install it
4. They will release a newer version before I even install it

A few of the options apply to me:
- I'm pretty satisfied with my current software, warts and all....
- Price is almost always an obstacle - I think many SW suites are overpriced and often do more than I need or want them to.
- I try new software occasionally, but not "regularly"
- And I don't usually have time (or the inclination) to learn too many new things that may or may not be useful, especially when the learning involves a lot of complicated stuff I don't ... See more A few of the options apply to me:

Though I agree with others in this thread and never buy new software until absolutely forced to do so, I think there should be another option: "I do purchase new software". In its present form, this poll virtually excludes the other side of the argument.

1. I don't care.
2. It costs money without necessarily being useful.
3. I want to translate, not to learn to operate what is essentially office software.
4. I like a hands-on feel. I've coded since age 13. I still do HTML by hand. CATs have their uses, but there's a limit to software hype I can take. I just want to translate.

This is what I thought was missing, until I said, well, the poll addresses those who don't. I am among those who don't unless... Those who do are not concerned by this poll.

buy new software and upgrades when I know it will help me become more productive and make more money. Sorry, I'm not translating for charity; I'm trying to make a living.
If a customer says that they're switching over to a new version of software and there will be a marked increase in work from next month, then yours truly will be off to the local computer shop and making a valuable investment ahead of the other translators.  ... I haven’t purchased anything for a couple of years because I use mostly free software. Obviously, the poll misses this quite important option.

Polls should address everyone. Furthermore, when mention is made of "software", the kind of software involved should also be mentioned. Let's make these polls useful.

Can't help agreeing with Henry here.
I'm a little perplexed. I really can't imagine translators not using Word and upgrading to recent versions since this is the preferred word processing software used by companies around the world. 
If you are aren't using software, are you using pen and paper?

I try and test new software. If it applies to my job, and I'm satisfied with its results, I analyze the cost-benefit for me, and if I consider it good, I just purchase it.
