I use my/customer TMs as a source of ideas, as inspiration, thesaurus, reference material, etc.
I really couldn't live without them anymore
I also have a primary TM where I add every translation that I have done, so it contains all my work from the past 8 years. A great resource whatever the topic of my current translation job.
@those who don't use TM's - why not?

I use MY OWN WF Classic and TMs most of the time these days. I've never worked with anyone else's and I don't think I'd be comfortable using them. I sort of feel the same about glossaries from clients or other people too... I just don't trust them as much as I would if there were my own creations.

Since starting with Trados almost exactly a year ago, my use of TMs has steadily increased, until it is now the rule rather than the exception. Particularly so because I am now more selective about the type of work I take on (e.g. no illegible PDFs!). Obviously, there are some jobs for which a TM is of little use, but for large technical jobs I now regard TM use as indispensable, if only for reasons of consistency.

I tried CAT tools and I did not enjoy working with them. But I love sight translation so I started using Dragon to dictate my translations. This increases my productivity more than a TM ever would.

... which actually means 99% of the time. Occasionally I'll get a text through as an ineditable PDF or I'll translate a couple of sentences without going to the effort of setting it all up with a TM. But in the vast majority of cases, I'll use a TM.

Imagine how fast you could be using both

I hate using other people's memories. They are always rubbish because even if the translations are OK they are not mine. So I very rarely do.
I love using my own memories. Watching segments translate themselves gives me the same buzz as watching coins coming out of a slot machine.

...although I have only just invested in a CAT tool. Not being a very techy person it's taking me a while to figure out how to use it. Hopefully, by this time next year, I might be able to say that my output and speed have increased.

Same here; I quite like using other people's (usually agencies') TMs but usually more as a source of suggestions which will still need to be checked.

The question basically means, "How often do you use CAT tools?"
Ahem. You can't use a TM without a CAT tool.
In answer to the question, 99% of the time since I'm a tech translator and I just can't imagine translating big manuals without the aid of a CAT tool any more.
Like Chris S, they're helping me get lots of translation done more quickly that I can bill the customer for.

It's something I was thinking to look into. Is that what you're doing? How do you find the workflow?

Why not use the many trial versions that are available online so that you can get an idea of their look and feel?

I was talking about combining both tools into the workflow. I've tried enough CATs to know I can't work with them on their own. It's just not for me.
