I only go to industry events if they are free and outside of working hours. I don't mind paying for my food and drinks though.

I don't go to events very far from home.
I have a feeling that the question was supposed to be "If there's an industry conference NOT very far from home, what would you do?" The answers would make more sense then.
Speaking of which, I'm leaving for an industry event in 5 minutes.

Me too. They same to be mostly about schmoozing and self-promotion - I'd rather spend the time more lucratively, i.e. actually working instead of just talking about it or planning to take over the world.

When I was in grad school I attended something like 50 conferences and presented several papers myself. That's it for me, I'm done with conferences. Also, over the years I came to the disappointing realization that, as others have pointed out, conferences are pretty useless - though they are useful for organizers, speakers, chairs, discussants etc., who typically organize and get involved in such events for strategic reasons.

... that so many people choose not to attend such events. I don't go to every translation conference I see advertised but I've found the ones I've attended, both ITI and ProZ events, amazingly useful, both from a networking perspective and from learning different things about the profession via the presentations. If nothing else, it gives you an enormous feeling of solidarity with professional colleagues and that shouldn't be underestimated for an isolated career such as ours. I'm still in touch... As online clients are available. I haven never been faced such situations, If it happens I would not go there.

I wouldn't go to one far away, but nearer home I like to meet others in the trade. The conference content is usually of secondary importance. (And Hi Claire - long time no see!)

I don't go to industry conferences. But I will most definately attend the EXPOLINGUA (yes, it's capitalized, so no yelling. ) And this is more of a fair, anyway.

Yes, it does feel as if this question should have 'not' in it. If there was a conference which was not far from home, and the programme looked interesting and relevant to me, then I would consider going. I definitely would not take my family, though. I usually make my way down to London (about 3 hours away) a couple of times a year for something or other, but would not travel further afield unless it was for something very special.
