I've always leaned towards languages throughout my l¡fe and education, but have no specific translation qualification.

I majored in languages and linguistics starting in high school and wrote my Ph.D. dissertation on translation theory.

I am convinced that it takes more than your native tongue to properly express your feelings or describe processes. Every language has its own "field of expertise", it seems. During my career I found myself bouncing back and forth between languages and science, first leading to a career abroad, and now finally pulling me into the world of translations.

I am a virologist/biochemist by training, then got my Diploma in Translation.

I studied languages and had some lectures and classes on translation, but it wasn't the main direction of the studies.
Still, those few classes were enough to make me realise "Oh, I want to do that for a living!"

A degree in Hispanic Studies and the IOL Diploma in translation. However, I still feel i have some way to go before being such a proficient translator as some of the people who use this website who do not in fact have direct linguistic qualificatiosn.

At age 32 I went back to university and after two years got certification for the work I already did. Then my boss decided that I was becoming too expensive.

Ｔｈａｔ's Japanese for "Yep! Sure am."
Primed by 7 years of Latin and 4 years of Greek at grammar school, not forgetting 5 years of French and a year of Russian. Followed by 4 years of Japanese (Hons, thank you) at London University (just wanted to do something different!).
Translation into and from Japanese accounted for a large part of my degree.
All this was just a launching pad for my career here -- I've been translating just over 30 years, primarily for ... See more Ｔｈａｔ's Japanese for "Yep! Sure am."
Primed by 7 years of Latin and 4 years of Greek at grammar school, not forgetting 5 years of French and a year of Russian. Followed by 4 years of Japanese (Hons, thank you) at London University (just wanted to do something different!).

All this was just a launching pad for my career here -- I've been translating just over 30 years, primarily for industry.

You just qualify your answer with a “Yes, as a translator” or “No, I'm not an interpreter by education.”
But the solecism is quite apparent. However, please keep in mind that the poll utility here at Proz is aged and not very flexible when it comes to the length of questions.
All the same, the pollster could have phrased the question more accurately by the use of proper punctuation, to wit:
Are you a translator, or an interpreter, by education?
Amazing what punctuation can do.

Yes. Yes, I am.
Or: Yes and no.
How?
Yes, I'm a translator by training (i.e. education: a BA and a MA)
No, I'm not an interpreter by training.
After years of toting my BA in Translation around, it was not enough for me; I needed to go back to school and meet a challenge.
Now, I could go for a doctorate, but it's not in the cards. Instead, I teach translation, which is a very satisfying activity.
