There generally are no transaction fee so nothing for the customers to cover.

I have one customer who insists on paying in a way which incurs transaction fees despite there being a free option available, so I stack up the bills and send them less often to mitigate the fees.

I've received a payment with a note from a client that "I added $5.00 because I do not want you to pay for the Paypal costs".

That sounds like a lovely client! Some of my clients pay the transaction fees if they occur; some others are happy for me to add percentage on the invoice; some others claim their policy does not allow them to, so I 'hide' the transaction fees by quoting higher rates.

I answered "Yes always", because most of my clients pay by direct online transfer into my bank, which doesn't charge me anything per transaction, at least not to my knowledge.
However, I occasionally receive payment via Paypal and I don't really know how that works, but I imagine their fees won't be too high or else people wouldn't use their services. If I were operating this way (Paypal) more often I might consider making an adjustment in my rates to compensate for any such charges.

Used to get £6 knocked off every foreign payment, rising to £12 in some cases, and that was nothing next to what the customers themselves were paying.

But now things are somewhat more civilised, unless you accept Paypal or Visa payments, which we don't.

Even so, I can't see it being a problem. If customers don't cover transaction fees, charge them more in the first place!

No ... Dec 11, 2013

I don't know what, if anything they pay their end, me I get charged 2 Euros for every bank transfer in Euros and approximately 8 Euros for every bank transfer in dollars. And that was the best deal I could find. Still everyone knows how those poor Greek banks are struggling .... I suppose I should feel grateful they allow me to pay my dues or something ....

Yes, sometimes Dec 11, 2013

It never happens when I receive payments by a bank transfer or Skrill, but Paypal takes its share and none of my clients ever offered to cover that.

They actually deduct the bank transfer fee from what they are transferring me.

I'm also very wary of doing work with overseas customers since Japanese banks apply a flat rate of 3,500 yen on any money transfer from abroad up to five million yen (sic, as quoted from bank teller) for the privilege of accepting money from an overseas customer.

At today's rate of around 102 yen to the $US dollar,

At today's rate of around 102 yen to the $US dollar, you do the math.

I feel as if I am in a firing range every time I receive an overseas bank transfer.

There are never banking fees (direct bank transfer or payment by French crossed cheques on a French bank account).

I once have been sent a Paypal transfer, which took me €35. The company is at 10 minutes from here...

I get paid by check :) Dec 11, 2013

Since all of my clients are stateside, I get my payments via check or direct deposit. So, zero transfer fees.

Unless I pay Paypal fees in case of advance payments in some exceptional cases.

Respondents should be 100% honest, and state "Rarely"! Dec 11, 2013

It simply cannot be correct that almost 50% of the respondents answer "Yes, always" or "Yes, sometimes"!
And I am pretty sure I know why: 90% of all Proz.com users do NOT keep a record of bank and/or PayPal charges. I do.
I have paid more than 500 Euros in PayPal fees since I started my freelance translation business in 2007, and to this should be added approx. 2 Euros for every bank transfer (which must be in the thousands by now...).

Yo también.
Me too.

95% of my clients do it. Rest of the clients are "occasional agencies".
