I don't use these devices meant for pure entertainment for work. You really need a reliable laptop, in my opinion. I find PC, especially IBM or Lenovo, much better than Mac for translation purposes. I like Mac for Videos only.

I mean not just typing in a translation but doing searches, handling email, and all the other tasks that form part of our professional lives.

I use both for work, inasmuch as I use them to answer e-mails, view files, etc., not for actual translation. In that respect, they are both equally useful. The phone is more portable but the tablet is bigger and more useable.

...for checking/responding to emails, and doing other minor things. I don't like smartphones, the only thing I want my phone to do is be capable of making calls and sending texts.

I work at my desk, guys! I'm almost always there during the working day, so these tools would be superfluous.
If for some reason I'm not, I wouldn't typically be in a situation where I would want to be making business decisions. My clients almost always wait until I get back.

A basic mobile phone and my 2 PCs and 2 laptops are enough to be getting on with.
As I see it, smartphones and tablets are designed primarily for leisure pursuits and socialising, or as a status symbol. Toys not tools.

Neither do I. Smartphons are not the size for a human being to use for any type of searches.

I think your decision to use (or not use) a smartphone or tablet really does depend on your modus operandi as a translator and the type of work you accept.
My impression with this site is that a fair number of translators primarily accept short-turnaround jobs, sometimes several per day. A smartphone and tablet would be an absolute necessity to maintain an almost unbroken online presence to intercept and accept sudden sporadic incoming from customers who demand almost instant delivery.
I used to operate this way yonks back and I'd jump to attention as soon as the phone rang. Yes, these were the days before the Internet and mobile phones.
However, now, like Muriel, I opt for longer, more protracted projects that I can get my teeth into, very much like the 3-month automotive project I'm doing right now for a great client. God bless 'em!
Needless to say, tools such as these and a perpetual online presence isn't necessary for work scenaries such as these. If a customer wants to contact me about something urgent, then they'll call me on my smartphone.
So, saying I might deign to do a few short jobs with a decent delivery date, say 2 or 3 days down the track, for a few of my customers. Even so, I can live without these tools for work-related tasks.
Mind you, if I had baby-size pinkies, I might use my smartphone more frequently for checking e-mail and research.

I don't even have a basic mobile phone. In fact, mobile phones are one of my pet hates, so I absolutely refuse to get one of the things.

That summarizes my position rather well. I can't really see what purpose a tablet would serve, as they don't strike me as being particularly practical devices. My laptop is much easier to use and is fairly portable so I can take it with me to check emails, if I am going to be away from home for several days.

Answered "I don't use them for work", whilst I use my smartphone for work e-mails. The results are going to be well skewed now...

My favorite is Acer Aspire One 725, 11.6". It weighs slightly above one kilo and is easy to carry and use whenever I happen to find myself. With a USB modem for internet access. I remember doing a great job while on a long distance train.

I use my smartphone to read e-mails and to make a call now en then, when I'm not at home. But for doing my work I need a computer with a good keyboard, mouse and typist chair.
