I drink a lot of tea to keep my concentration high while working, and if I have drunk a lot of tea during the day this keeps me awake at night. It is a question of getting the balance right.
| No, not any more… | Aug 9, 2014 |
I know myself pretty well, I’m much organized and much more calm about things than I was some 30 years ago.
The only thing that still affects my sleep pattern is the worry associated with late or non-payments!

I've been translating since forever, but I'm a perfectionist and I always end up spending more time than I planned on to make my work shine - at the cost of zzzzzzs.

Missed sleep, if there is such a thing, is no problem. If a project keeps me awake all night, then I'll just get up at noon... or whenever I wake up. Usually this works quite well, since I normally don't have to be anywhere at a certain (and early) time.
I don't mind staying up late for work if I have to -- in fact, I'm sort of a night owl However, unless an unexpected rush job comes up, I keep a balanced sleep routine as part of an overall balanced life (I'm no longer a kiddo). And, as is well known, 98% of rush jobs are no longer rush the minute you ask for a surcharge!

Sometimes I have to stay up late for work, but it just means that I am going to wake up later.

I think the best part of being a freelancer is being able to take naps whenever I need one. I was a night owl long before becoming a translator, but now I wake up 2 or 3 times a night to check emails and answer any questions that I might receive - mostly for my european clients.
I am a pretty sound sleeper - the moment work starts affecting my sleep I will know something will need to change!
| Not sure whether I understood correctly | Aug 9, 2014 |
I normally don't accept rush jobs and never accept overnight jobs, but if I have too much work this does affect my sleep, of course! Sometimes I even wake up with a good solution for my translation I left the night before, so my mind still continues to work when I sleep.:-)
No good sleep for me means no good work. Sleep is very important precondition for concentration, productivity and quality of work. Even while a high work load I have at least 6 hours of night sleep.
Thus, I never accept overnight jobs, too.
