I don't use social networking sites, except the bar-restaurant down the road (with restraint).

LinkedIn has kept me in touch with many colleagues that I don't see on ProZ. Some have given me nice recommendations, and some of have actually recommended me for work. Granted, this happens on ProZ as well, but the two together complement and complete my professional network. (I try to reserve Facebook for family and personal friends.)

ProZ.com is a social networking site, too!
The very first sentence of its Wiki article says so: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ProZ.com

I have received work through contacts on Facebook groups. It's also a good way of keeping in touch with colleagues that I met while on my translation MA course. I find that freelance translation can be a lonely business at times, so social networks help me to overcome that.

Agree with Lillian. Translators sites, actually ProZ only, do make a considerable difference professionally.
Now, Linkedin and Facebook have never been useful professionally whatsoever. Facebook is not meant for that anyway. But Linkedin's purpose is professional, and it does not bring any professional benefits.
I consider ProZ a social network of translators worldwide who interact professionally. IT does not have chats, irrelevant posts, stupid pictures of your hamburger or selfies; so it is what a social network should be. So, if ProZ cannot be considered a Social Network, my answer changes to "no way" immediately. | | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Does the use of social networking sites affect your work? | Protemos translation business management system | Create your account in minutes, and start working! 3-month trial for agencies, and free for freelancers!
