One of the biggest challenges in freelancing is managing the irregularity of work that this career entails - it hardly ever comes in a steady flow. Sometimes you may be extremely busy with various projects, and other times, well... Two or three weekdays without a job are not uncommon, sometimes a quiet period is even welcome, others is worrying!

that 20% really never have a day without work.
These days I very rarely have a prolonged period without work, but there's always the odd day with nothing on. | | | | Vera Schoen Шведска Local time: 06:01 германски на шведски + ...
I'm one of those who answered "No".
Are there weekdays without work? Yes, it happens.
Weekends with work? Often.
So on the job-less weekdays I'm happy not to work.

It does happen from time to time and it could always happen. These days I also tend to have projects booked in advance too. Take now for instance, I just got back from vacation and I thought I'd have a few days like that while the momentum builds up again, but I've been busy straight-away, admittedly with small jobs, maybe not working at full capacity. I have a big-ish job lined up which will start next week, but I am not sure exactly what the start date will be yet, so there might be a gap ther... Though, as Teresa said, if I had a quiet spell of more than a couple of days, with nothing booked ahead, I'd probably start to worry.

I have no work today, for instance. Anyone out there need a French to English translator?

not any longer, but we never know what will happen in the future, so I am still open to new clients as long as they pay my rates, pay on time and communicate in a respectful and professional manner. | | | | Thayenga Германија Local time: 06:01 Член (2009) англиски на германски + ...
There were only a few days now and then without work, but this has not happened in the past months. And, based on all current and guaranteed upcoming projects, this will definately not happen over the next 4 - 5 months.
Fortunately not. I do take the odd day off where I should be working, but those are the benefits of being a freelancer. Sometimes I get punished for doing that, but as long as I have it "under control" then I am not worried.
I consider myself fortunate for this and never complain about it.

Yes, but I am supposed to be a retired man, so when I don't have any work I act like a retired man. I don't promote myself, so my workload is manageable and I can be working or retired as I may wish. | | | | Triston Goodwin Соединети Американски Држави Local time: 22:01 шпански на англиски + ... | Work can take so many forms | Sep 10, 2014 |
I may not be translating, but I might be doing administrative stuff, or working on the office, upgrading a computer, working on my blog... building halloween props in my basement (my neighbors think I'm a mass murderer because of all the body parts... their kids think it's awesome).
Today I have no translation projects, so I'm casting some rocks in silicone, then I'm doing a pickaxe. I'm building a Minecraft cave for the kids this year ...
