I'm reluctant to pay much for any schmoozefests, and I'm usually too busy doing something else anyway to actually physically attend things, so rarely make it to any. I've missed the last few pow-wows in my area due to my workload or household chores, or a combination of the two. | | | | | Not usually but sometimes | Nov 11, 2014 |
I don't usually, but I do occasionally - but this doesn't seem to be an answer option. | | | | Muriel Vasconcellos (X) Соединети Американски Држави Local time: 06:53 шпански на англиски + ... | Other - I used to | Nov 11, 2014 |
I used to be very active in ATA. The truth is that my career began to soar when I stopped spending time volunteering and schmoozing. It never led to any work.
I don't see myself returning to that life, but never say never.

That is one of the disadvantages of living somewhere like Cyprus - there are no such translator events here. | | | | | No, and I don't plan to! | Nov 11, 2014 |
I used to when I worked in-house. We were more than encouraged to take part in conferences, seminars, workshops, lectures, training sessions and other related translation events. Since I started working freelance, I must say that I have neither the time nor the motivation… | | | | Deirdre Brophy (X) Франција англиски на ирски + ... | New city, new people... | Nov 11, 2014 |
Since I have just moved to a new city, I am trying out some local chamber of commerce and translator association get-togethers soon. I would have thought the in-person contact to be valuable, will report back!

I did want to organise one for this year, but the staff here dropped me like a stone just before I was going to sign contracts.
I have attended some in the past and they were really useful and I met and still keep in touch with other customers and translators.
Would like to attend one again in Germany or near to the south of Germany. | | | | Sheila Wilson Шпанија Local time: 14:53 Член (2007) англиски + ... | We must go to them then, Tim | Nov 11, 2014 |

My island's five time smaller than yours, Tim , so there's no chance of one here, either. But that just gives us a good excuse to get off our lovely little islands and see what's elsewhere. Since I arrived here, I've been to a ProZ.com conference in Porto and I'm thinking of going to the Rotterdam one next June.
It's hard to say exactly how much work comes my way from conferences. But it certainly isn't zero; far from it. I've met peers who've outsourced to me or passed clients to me due to excess workload, holiday relief, requests for my pair or my specialisations from a good client they don't want to let down... And I've met outsourcers who have become clients. And of course there's always something to be gained from the sessions.
I've also always combined such events with holidays, with at least part of the cost of that holiday borne by my business i.e. set against my tax bill. I like to feel that the taxman is somehow paying for my holidays . | | | | 564354352 (X) Данска Local time: 15:53 дански на англиски + ... | No, but I would like to | Nov 11, 2014 |
Not much going on around here (Denmark), well, not anything that I consider relevant professionally. But I would love to attend conferences, trade fairs, seminars, lectures etc. | | | | Thayenga Германија Local time: 15:53 Член (2009) англиски на германски + ... | Seldom, if ever | Nov 11, 2014 |
It depends on the conference. This past August I attended the FIT World Congress - which was well worth my time. Other than this one, I haven't attended any conferences. Too busy, I guess.

I have attended several entrepreneurial events and conferences, and even a Star Wars thing or two (it was for school, I promise!), but never anything related to translation. Do people come in costume? | | | | | Really enjoy the Danish powwows | Nov 11, 2014 |
I really enjoy the Danish powwows - and was bitterly disappointed to miss out this September.
They are special - a one-day conference about all sorts of things, time for networking, and in recentyears sometimes a second-day event like a proofreading workshop or a visit to the headquarters of one of the big online dictionaries... There is more than marzipan in Odense!! And people come from other countries to join in and speak Danish.

I don't go to a lot of in-person events, but when I do, it is well worth it. ▲ Collapse | | | | Claire Cox Обединето Кралство Local time: 14:53 француски на англиски + ...

See more ... to see the figures for conference attendance so low. I've written about this at length on my blog, both on the subject of networking in general http://clairecoxtranslations.wordpress.com/2014/05/07/networking-business-essential-or-extravagant-extra/ and the FIT Congress in Berlin specifically http://clairecoxtranslations.wordpress.com/2014/08/26/confessions-of-a-conference-addict-my-time-in-berlin/ so I'm not going to go into great detail here, but I really do think such events are well worth the investment of time and money. Not only from the point of view of meeting colleagues, but also picking up client contacts, discovering new innovations in technology, resolving queries in existing technology AND keeping your finger on the pulse with regard to rates, etc. Most of all, they are invariably extremely enjoyable: I'm by no means an extrovert, but as an isolated freelancer, it really does you good to get out of your four walls and into a different environment with like-minded individuals. It gives you a real boost - and that's got to be worthwhile!
My very first conferences were ProZ conferences and very good they were too - I would recommend anyone to give them a go. Even local workshops and training events give you a different perspective and there's always scope for improvement in working practices, even amongst those of us who have been in the profession for years.... ▲ Collapse | | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Do you usually attend in person events or conferences? | Wordfast Pro | Translation Memory Software for Any Platform
